Kirkgunzeon Primary School Announces Open School Days – All Welcome!

Kirkgunzeon Primary School is delighted to invite parents, carers and all members of the community to our upcoming Open School Days this December. These events offer a warm and friendly opportunity to experience our unique rural school environment, where children learn within a nurturing, family-like setting and thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
Open School Day Dates
• Tuesday 2nd December – 2:30 – 3:30pm
• Thursday 11th December – 2:30 – 3:30pm
Visitors are warmly invited to explore our classrooms, meet staff and pupils, and see first-hand what makes Kirkgunzeon Primary such a special place to learn and grow. We will also be serving warm juice and winter waffles to add a little seasonal cheer.

Kirkgunzeon Primary School has experienced remarkable growth, welcoming 17 new pupils over the last two years, with even more siblings set to join us in the near future – clear signs of the trust families place in our school and the strength of our community ethos.

Academically, the school continues to shine. With an attainment rate above 92%, Kirkgunzeon stands out as one of the strongest performing rural schools in the region.

🌿 Spring Clean Up Scotland – Join Us! 🌿

We’re excited to announce that Kirkgunzeon Primary School will be taking part in Spring Clean Up Scotland this Friday, 21st March, from 1pm to 3pm! 💪✨

Our pupils will be heading out into the village to help tidy up and make Kirkgunzeon cleaner and greener for everyone. This is part of a national campaign to encourage environmental awareness, community spirit, and responsibility — and we’d love your help too!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Everyone is warmly invited to come along and join us — whether you're a parent, carer, neighbor or friend. The more, the merrier!

☕🍪 Drinks and biscuits will be provided for all volunteers.

No rural school, no rural education for the next generation of farmers: Without local schools, we lose the opportunity to inspire young people to carry on vital agricultural traditions.
No rural school, no rural spending capacity: The economic ripple effects of losing schools impact local businesses and community sustainability.
The message to our children: If young people grow up seeing no investment in their communities, they are implicitly taught to leave—and not return.

Dumfries & Galloway Council promotes programs like Making Work Work and DG Works to help young mothers return to the workforce. While these initiatives are important, they are directly undermined by the Council's plans to close rural schools.
Here’s the reality:
No rural schools = no working moms. For many mothers, rural school closures mean traveling up to an hour each way to get their children to school. That’s two hours a day lost—time that could have been spent working, training, or developing careers.
Without local schools, young mothers face impossible choices between family responsibilities and pursuing work opportunities.
Closing rural schools doesn’t just hurt education; it actively discourages mothers from rejoining the workforce, leading to a decline in rural economic stability.
We need policies that support mothers holistically, not contradict them. If we value programs like Making Work Work, we must also protect the infrastructure—like rural schools—that makes work feasible for mothers in rural communities.

Dumfries & Galloway Council’s 2023-2028 vision paints a picture of a successful region built on fairness, opportunity, and quality public services, with connected, healthy, and sustainable communities. They aspire to make our region the natural place to live, work, visit, and invest.
Yet, their plan to close rural schools and slash budgets for rural education support directly contradicts this vision. How can we have a "growing economy" or "sustainable communities" when our children’s education and the lifeblood of our rural areas are under threat?
Rural schools are at the heart of our communities—they’re not just places of learning but vital hubs that bring people together. Closing them would devastate local families, hinder opportunities for young people, and risk the very future of our villages.

Wee Schools Still Matter: Help Protect Rural Education in Dumfries and Galloway!

Our rural and small schools are under threat from proposals labeling them “unsustainable” and putting communities at risk.

These schools are vital to our rural life, offering small class sizes, top academic performance, and close community ties.
