It was a busy morning for Helen and David Beynon on Tuesday at the North East Derbyshire Jobs and Training Fair in Dronfield!

Helen and David had some great conversations with visitors about apprenticeships, training opportunities and developing skills in the workplace, as well as connecting with other organisations from across the area.

A big thank you to North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC) and Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for organising such a well-attended event, and to everyone who stopped by to speak to the Ascento team. 🙌

Recruiting someone aged 16–24 into a marketing or business role?
Their eligible apprenticeship training could be fully government funded.

If you’re a non-levy employer and they're a new hire, you may also qualify for a £2,000 hiring payment for apprenticeship starts from 1 October 2026.

We can help you check eligibility and plan the role and training.

What can spaghetti and marshmallows teach us about teamwork?
Last week our leadership coach Rachael put this question to learners during an in-person training day in Sheffield.

The challenge was to work together to build the tallest tower, but behind the fun (and frustration) was an important opportunity to think about team roles.

Who naturally took the lead?
Who came up with the ideas?
Who kept the group focused?
Who spotted what wasn’t working?
And who made sure the job got done?

It was a simple, practical way to help learners recognise the different strengths people bring to a team, and consider how a good leader can bring those strengths together.

A great session, lots of learning and some very creative construction!

Turns out, putting a tiny football in the middle of the office is one way to find out just how competitive your colleagues are… ⚽

A few highlights from our Goal or Miss challenge at the latest Ascento team day.

There was questionable technique!

It was a bit of fun, but also a good reminder that making time to get together and have a bit of laugh matters when you spend most of your working week focused on learners, employers and deadlines.

We’ll be sticking to skills training rather than football coaching for now...

The new football season is kicking off, and it’s not just on the pitch where future leaders are starting to emerge. ⚽

Some of the best leadership behaviours appear long before someone gets the job title.

Here are five signs you may already have an emerging leader in your team 👇

From September, government funding for new starts on the Level 3 Team Leader apprenticeship comes to an end. The need to develop your future managers doesn’t.

There will still be people in your team who need to develop practical management skills, whether they’re preparing for their first management role, starting to supervise others or taking on more responsibility.

That’s why we’ve introduced our new Level 3 Business Skills for Emerging Leaders Apprenticeship.

The programme combines practical business skills with leadership and management development through the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), including the opportunity to achieve Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status.

It’s designed for employees who are showing potential and are ready to develop the skills they’ll need to take that next step.

Learners develop practical skills in:
âś… Leadership and management
âś… Communication and influencing
âś… Planning and prioritisation
âś… Project coordination
âś… Problem-solving and continuous improvement
âś… AI and digital tools

Because developing future managers shouldn’t start when someone gets their first management title.

Giving people the right skills earlier can help them become ready to step up when the opportunity comes.

One of the best ways to improve marketing performance isn't always hiring new talent - it's developing the talent you already have.

The ability to lead people, prioritise budgets and connect marketing activity to business goals is what helps teams perform consistently.

Technical skills get marketers promoted. Leadership skills help them succeed. That's exactly what our Level 6 Marketing Manager apprenticeship is designed to develop.

The way people search for information is changing.
Many people now ask ChatGPT, Google AI or Copilot for answers rather than clicking through pages of search results. If your marketing team is still focused solely on traditional SEO, you could be missing opportunities to get found online.

The businesses that adapt first will be in a much stronger position to stay visible and attract new customers.

The question is: does your marketing team have the skills needed for this shift?

One of the biggest challenges in business:
We often promote great marketers into management roles and expect them to instinctively become strategic leaders.

They know how to create campaigns, manage social media and write content, but suddenly they’re expected to think strategically, influence stakeholders, manage budgets, lead people, and align marketing activity to wider business goals.

That’s exactly why programmes like the Level 6 Marketing Manager apprenticeship matter, helping experienced marketers develop into confident strategic leaders rather than simply expecting them to “figure it out” after promotion.

Because the difference between a good marketer and a strong marketing leader can completely change a business.

With recent changes to apprenticeship funding, many employers may need to rethink how they develop current and future managers.

If building leadership capability is part of your growth plans for 2026, it’s worth reviewing what funded options are still available and whether there is a need to secure places sooner rather than later.

Strong leadership pipelines do not happen by accident - they need planning.
