Confessions Of A Pyjama Drama Teacher: Week One

When my children went back to school after the summer, they felt a bit nervous about being back. Six weeks is a long time to be away from anything. Honestly, I felt exactly the same!

But here are 5 things I realised in my very first week back.

1️⃣Pyjama Drama really is magical. Truly. Watching children’s confidence, imagination and life skills grow in just one session is something I never get tired of.

2️⃣The rockstar welcome from the children who have done it before. My nerves vanished instantly.

3️⃣Watching the children who have never done it before go from unsure to not wanting it to end.

4️⃣The sheer amount of pretend chocolate cake I have eaten this week.

5️⃣Seeing how proud the children were joining in with actions, instruments and counting. BRAVO!

Bring on the rest of term! 🥳

You may have heard the cliche: “drama students love pretending to be trees.” 🌳

Maybe YOU were cast as one in a school play, an improv class, or some very earnest method acting, it’s really very fun!

Well this term, it’s the Pyjama Drama children’s turn.

Why don’t you try it at home: ⬇️

Stand tall and still, like a tree trunk
Arms out wide, they’re your branches
Wiggle your fingers, they’re the leaves
Now sway them side to side, there’s a breeze coming through

Feet rooted, arms swaying, full tree mode activated!
🍁🍃🍂

I can’t wait for our Ten Autumn Leaves action song!

Just 2 weeks till classes start again and I get to introduce Pyjama Drama to children starting pre-school in September, it’s gone super super quick this year! ☀️

I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and hearing all about the memories they have been making with you. I’m so grateful to spend the summer with my two but also looking forward to getting back to reality! Anyone else? 😬

How’s your summer been? 💛

At Pyjama Drama, we believe that helping children understand their emotions start with giving them the opportunity to recognise, explore and name them.

To be able to manage their emotions, a child must first be able to recognise and name them, and drama helps children to do just this.

They learn what emotions look like when I model them through their own facial expressions and body language. They experience emotions for themselves as they take on different roles.

And they discuss emotions, both in and out of role, learning to name how they and others might be feeling.

Through our stories, songs, characters and imaginative adventures, children can explore feelings in a safe and playful way from happy and excited to worried, cross, sad, proud and everything in between.

Behind the scenes, the imagination is already in full swing! 💭

I’ve started planning for the new academic year, and I honestly can’t wait to share them these classes with your little ones.💛

This year we’ll be going on so many exciting imaginary adventures together. Exploring ‘me and my feelings’, ‘opposites’, ‘fairy tales’, ‘the great outdoors’, ‘toys’, ‘animal homes’, and lots of seasonal celebrations and festivals along the way (with some brand new ‘specials’.) 👀

One of the things I love most about Pyjama Drama is delivering classes where children can step into a story, use their imaginations, express their emotions, build confidence, and learn through play. Every session is carefully designed to support communication, creativity, social skills, and emotional development all while having enormous fun!

There is so much fun, laughter, movement, music, and storytelling ahead, and I’m genuinely counting down the days until we can begin these new adventures together! 📅🌴

I had the absolute pleasure of helping Freddie celebrate his birthday this weekend! 🎈

It was a beautiful sunny morning until disaster struck in New York City! 😱 A mischievous supervillain had stolen our favourite superhero suits and used their powers to steal the sun from the sky. It was up to our incredible team of young superheroes to save the day! 🦸🏽

Working together with fantastic teamwork and imagination, the heroes snuck into the castle on the hill, recovered the stolen power, and launched the sun back into the sky where it belonged.💥

But the best part of the adventure came when they finally confronted the supervillain. The children chose kindness. They made friends with the villain and even invited them to join the birthday party! ❤️

What an amazing reminder that while the world needs heroes and light, it also needs friendship, compassion, and imagination.

Happy Birthday, Freddie! Thank you for letting me be part of such an unforgettable adventure. 🦸🎉

What a year it’s been for Pyjama Drama Worcestershire! ❤️ It’s the final week and we are having a party. 🎉

Bravo to all of the children and goodbye to those going to school in September. 🥲 You’ve graduated from Rainbows!

Through all the laughter, songs, and wonderful pretending, you’ve learned such important life skills, ones I hope you’ll carry with you as you begin school.

You’ve had lots of practice solving problems, being kind, brave and creative in our Pyjama Drama classes and I wish you so much happiness and success on your next big adventure.

Thank you, Lydia ❤️

One of the things I love most about teaching Pyjama Drama is that no two classes are ever the same!

Our classes are carefully designed to help children develop important life skills through drama and imaginative play but they’re also packed full of fun! Every week when I’m planning, I always try to sneak in a little comedy. After a year together, I usually have a pretty good idea of what will get the biggest giggles! 🤣

That said, my plans are always kept fairly loose. Parents and early years educators will know that children are wonderfully unpredictable, and I love giving them the freedom to help shape where our adventures go.

This week proved exactly why! During our introduction, one child proudly announced to the group, with perfect comic timing, that he had “sat on the alien.” 👽😂 The room erupted with laughter, and as any Pyjama Drama teacher knows, improvisation is key!

Moments like these are why I love what I do. The children’s creativity, confidence, imagination and sense of humour make every class an adventure and often a comedy show too! ❤️

“Find a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.”❤️

I was reminded of this over the weekend when I took my son to the barbers. We ended up chatting about how much we both love being self-employed and how doing something you’re passionate about every day doesn’t really feel like work at all.

Just last week, a pre-school manager took time out of her busy day to join one of our Pyjama Drama classes. Afterwards, she said, “It’s just so much fun, I had to come and join in!”🤩

Moments like these make me realise how lucky I am to do what I do. I love seeing the joy that Pyjama Drama brings, not just to me but to practitioners, managers, and most importantly, the children.

Watching children grow in confidence, imagination and creativity through play is an absolute privilege, and it’s a reminder every day that loving what you do really does make all the difference!
