Cracking the 4x4: My Barcelona Ale-Hop Find

On a recent trip to Barcelona, I wandered into Ale-Hop (yes, the shop with the cows outside!) and walked out with a brand-new 4x4 cube puzzle. I thought, “How different can this be from the 3x3 I already know?” Spoiler alert: it’s different. It’s bigger, trickier, and way more satisfying once you start to crack the code.

If you’ve ever thought about stepping up from a 3x3 to a 4x4, here’s my beginner-friendly guide to tackling this colourful beast.

Step 1: Solving the Centres
The first thing you need to do is lock in the centre pieces. Unlike the 3x3, the 4x4 doesn’t come with fixed centres, so you have to build them yourself.

Set them up with this orientation:

White on top
Yellow on bottom
Red in front
Blue on the right
Orange on the back
Green on the left

To move a centre piece into place, hold the cube so the colour you want is in the bottom right. Then do this algorithm:

Rr, U’, Rr’

Repeat until all six centres are complete. Congratulations — your cube is already starting to look less like a mess and more like a masterpiece.

Step 2: Solving the Edges
Now it’s time to pair up the edge pieces. This is the part where the cube starts to feel like a living thing, clicking together with a satisfying rhythm.

If the edges you want to pair are on opposite sides, use:
R F’ U F

If the edges are on the same row, use:
Dd R F’ U R’ F Dd’

Repeat this process until all edges are neatly paired. It’s a bit fiddly at first, but once you spot the patterns, it becomes almost hypnotic.

Step 3: Solve Like a 3x3
Here’s the best part: once centres and edges are done, the cube effectively shrinks back into a 3x3 puzzle. From here, you can use the same algorithms and muscle memory you already know. If you’ve mastered the 3x3, you’re in familiar territory again.

Why the 4x4 is Worth It
Learning the 4x4 is more than just a bigger challenge — it’s a gateway into the world of advanced cubing. You learn patience, pattern recognition, and problem-solving on a whole new level. Plus, pulling out a 4x4 in public instantly earns you extra “wow” points.

So, if you’re ready to push past the basics, pick up a 4x4 and start twisting. Just remember: every solve starts with one small move.

How Cubing Can Replace Doom scrolling

We’ve all been there: phone in hand, brain on autopilot, endlessly scrolling through the news feed or watching “just one more” video. Ten minutes turn into an hour, and suddenly you’re not even sure what you just read. That’s doom scrolling — and it’s a trap. But here’s a quirky, colourful escape route: learn to solve the 3x3 cube.

Unlike the zombie stare at your phone, cubing wakes your brain up. Every twist and turn is a mini puzzle, demanding pattern recognition, memory skills, and even a little bit of mindful focus. You’re not just fidgeting — you’re training your mind while doing something tactile and satisfying. In fact, many cubers say solving a cube feels like a moving meditation.

Next time you feel yourself sliding into doom scroll mode, swap your phone for your cube. Instead of feeding the algorithm, feed your brain. Whether you’re following our step-by-step beginner tutorials ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons ) or just practicing the Daisy over and over again, you’ll discover that cubing is the ultimate offline fidget toy — a hobby that’s both playful and productive.

And the best part? Once you’ve learned the basics, it’s addictive in the best way. “Just one more solve” becomes your new mantra (and yes, it’s a way better habit than “just one more scroll”).

If you’re ready to ditch the endless feed and pick up a brain-boosting skill instead, start with our Rightie ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/rightie ) move lesson or the Leftie ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/leftie ) tutorial. Trust us — your thumbs deserve a better workout than scrolling.

Cube Time: The Perfect Parent-Child Holiday Challenge

School’s out, work’s on pause, and suddenly you’ve got that rare gift — time with your kids. But what to do between trips to the beach, long train rides, or lazy afternoons in the park? That’s where the 3x3 cube comes in — the pocket-sized puzzle that turns “I’m bored” into “I think I’ve nearly cracked it!”

Whether you’re sitting on a picnic blanket, waiting for a coach, or relaxing in a sunny garden, cubing is the perfect holiday companion. It doesn’t need Wi-Fi, batteries, or a massive amount of space — just curious fingers and a bit of patience.

Best of all, learning together is a blast. You get to share the highs of a perfect turn, the groans of a colour mix-up, and the pure joy when the final layer clicks into place. Plus, your kids get to see you learning alongside them — proving that problem-solving is something you never grow out of.

So next time you pack for a holiday, slip a cube in the bag. It’s small, it’s fun, and it just might become your favourite way to spend travel time together. Just be prepared — “one more try” can last for hours.

Learning the Cube is Like Learning to Ride a Bike

Remember the first time you wobbled down the street on a bike? You probably looked awkward, felt awkward, and maybe even crashed into a hedge (twice). Learning to solve the 3x3 Cube is exactly the same — minus the scraped knees. Well… unless you drop it on your foot.

At first, your fingers feel clumsy. You keep forgetting which way is right, which way is left, and whether you’ve already done that move you just did. That’s normal! Every cuber has been there. In fact, one of the first skills you’ll master is the Rightie ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/rightie ) move — your trusty, twisty building block. And yes, you’ll also need the equally charming Leftie ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/rightie ) move to balance things out.

The magic happens when the muscle memory kicks in. Suddenly, your hands know what to do without you thinking about it. Just like riding a bike, you stop overthinking each step and start enjoying the flow. That’s when cubing becomes less about “figuring it out” and more about “look how smooth this is!”

The wobbly start is worth it. Because once you’re cruising — whether it’s on two wheels or with six coloured sides — there’s a pride and freedom you can’t fake. And unlike your bike, your cube can fit in your pocket, join you at the coffee shop, and never require a puncture repair kit.

So grab your cube, hop on, and start pedalling through those turns. Who knows? The next time someone hands you a scrambled cube, you might just give them that smile that says, “I’ve got this.”

5 Things Only Cubers Will Understand

Once you’ve cracked the Rubik’s Cube code, life starts to shift — literally. You start seeing cube patterns in bathroom tiles and your fingers move in mysterious R U R' U' motions while you’re on the bus. Here are 5 things only fellow cubers (and those on the glorious path to becoming one) will truly get.

1. You speak fluent algorithm.
F R U R' U' F'? That’s not random gibberish — that’s a perfectly normal sentence in Cubish. And yes, it’s totally acceptable to mumble it while solving in public. People love that.

2. Your cube is your fidget toy, therapist, and ego boost — all in one.
Stressed? Cube. Bored? Cube. Trying to impress someone at a party? Cube. Learning to solve a 3x3 is basically unlocking a superpower.

3. “Just one more solve” is a lie you tell yourself nightly.
You were only going to practice for 5 minutes. It's now midnight. Your hands hurt. You still don’t regret it.

4. You secretly judge how people hold the cube.
“Wait… are they turning it like that on purpose?” Learning the cube means you now have Opinions™ on finger placement, corner starts, and whether or not the yellow face should always be on top.

5. You want everyone to learn — even if it means explaining ‘Daisy’ ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/daisy/ ) for the 42nd time. Cubing isn’t a lonely road. It’s a colourful, twisty journey of joy, logic, and shouting “YES!” when the white cross ( https://twistandsolve.co.uk/lessons/white-cross/ ) finally clicks.

If you’ve ever thought “I wish I could solve one of those,” then https://twistandsolve.co.uk is exactly where you need to be.
Whether you’re learning to solve the cube from scratch, or just vibing with the click-clack of each twist — you’re one of us now. Welcome. 🚀
