Following on from last week’s video demonstrating the minor pentatonic scale, this week we’re focusing on string bends and vibratos. These techniques are used frequently within the rock and blues genres, and can also be combined.

I am using the E minor pentatonic scale in this video, but this time I’m adding vibratos and string bends to add textures and personality, as well as bending the pitch to a higher note on the G, B and high E strings. In this video I am using a combination of ‘half step’ string bends and ‘whole step’ string bends (semitones and whole tones) alongside vibratos. These techniques go hand in hand when learning how to ad lib around the pentatonic scale.

The backing track is made by myself and is available for all my students who are wanting to expand their improvisation competency.

This week a lot of my students have been learning how to play, and why we play the minor pentatonic scale. It is one of the most accessible and versatile scales in a guitar player’s arsenal. Opening up the doors to improvisation, skill development, riff and hook writing etc. alongside strengthening fingers and improving stretch and reach on the fretboard.

The minor pentatonic scale was paramount in my personal development as a lead guitarist, helping introduce the full minor scale on the guitar, (even the major scale), string bends, slides, hammer-ons and pull offs and more.

In this video, I am playing the A minor pentatonic scale, starting from the 5th fret.
