When a child hits, the priority is not to “win” the moment. It is to keep everyone safe, hold the boundary and help the child regain control.

Hitting can happen when a child is overwhelmed, frustrated, angry or simply does not yet have the skills to communicate what is happening inside them. That does not mean we ignore the behaviour or allow someone to be hurt.

We can be very clear:

“I will not let you hit.”

And still recognise that the child may need our help to regulate before they can listen, reflect or learn.

Once calm has returned, that is the time to reinforce the boundary, explore what happened and practise safer alternatives for next time.

Understanding the behaviour is not the same as excusing it. We can support the child AND keep firm boundaries around safety.

Save this post for the moments when you need it.

Some of the biggest battles with children start over the smallest things.

“Put your shoes on.”
“No.”
“It’s time for bed.”
“No.”
“Please get dressed.”
“No!”

It can feel like they are arguing about everything. But often, they are really fighting for a bit of control.

The boundary can stay the same, while you give a small choice inside it:

“Shoes first or coat first?”
“Red top or blue top?”
“Do you want to walk to the gate or hold my hand?”
“Teeth first or pyjamas first?”

The task still happens. You are not giving in. You are helping your child feel heard without turning every routine into a standoff.

Keep the choices simple. Only offer options you can genuinely accept. Then pause and give them a moment to decide.

It will not fix every hard moment, and some days will still be messy. But a little choice can lower the temperature for everyone.

The average parent posts over 1500 photos of their child on social media before they turn five.

Social media can be a great place to collect and share moments with friends and family, but if you are posting pictures of children, it's always smart to think about how they might be accessed and who might be accessing them.

Some simple checks to make:

- Are your social media privacy settings up to date - do they keep your photos private?
- Is there any identifying information, such as school badges, on display?
- Could someone use AI to misuse an image you've posted?

For more information on keeping your family photos safe on social, search "NSPCC protect your child's photos"

It’s World Haemophilia Day, and this year the theme is “Diagnosis: First step to care”, highlighting the critical importance of diagnosis - the essential first step in treatment and care.

The WFH estimates that over three-quarters of the population of people with haemophilia worldwide are undiagnosed, and an even more significant gap also exists for other bleeding disorders.

This means that hundreds of thousands of people with bleeding disorders around the world still lack access to basic care. We have the power - and the shared commitment - to change this.

We can improve diagnostic outcomes by strengthening the skills of healthcare professionals and enhancing the effectiveness of laboratories.

By increasing global diagnosis rates, we can move one step closer to our shared vision of Treatment for All.
