What Is a Realistic High Score in an ABRSM Piano Exam?

Many students and parents wonder what an “excellent” ABRSM piano exam result looks like. Since the maximum possible score is 150 marks, it’s easy to assume that the highest-achieving students regularly score close to full marks. In reality, that’s rarely the case.

Understanding the Marking

ABRSM Practical exams are marked out of 150:

* 100 – Pass
* 120 – Merit
* 130 – Distinction

Any score of 130 or above earns a Distinction, but not all Distinctions are the same. A score of 130 demonstrates a very strong performance, while scores in the high 130s and 140s represent exceptionally polished playing.

What Is a Realistic Top Score?

Although 150/150 is theoretically possible, ABRSM has never published statistics showing how many candidates have achieved a perfect score. It is widely considered to be exceptionally rare.

In practice, many experienced piano teachers find that:

* 130–135 is a realistic and excellent score for a well-prepared student earning a Distinction.
* 136–140 reflects an outstanding performance.
* 141–149 is uncommon and represents an exceptional level of musical and technical achievement.
* 150/150 is possible, but so rare that ABRSM does not publish figures on how often it has occurred. # #
