➗ Should an 11+ student always use the mathematical method they were taught at school?

This is something I think parents often worry about.

The answer is not necessarily.

The method your child has been taught at school is important, reliable and absolutely worth knowing - but in an 11+ exam, I also want children to develop the confidence to recognise when there might be a quicker, easier or more efficient way to solve a problem.

For example, if a question asks for 25% of 84, a child could use a formal method, but they could also recognise that 25% is a quarter:

84 ÷ 4 = 21

The important thing isn’t learning lots of clever tricks. It’s developing a mathematical toolbox and knowing which tool to use.

You’ll hear different advice on this - some people say children should always read the questions first.

But is that really the best approach for every comprehension passage?

For a long, story-based passage, I often recommend reading the passage first so that the child understands the story, the characters and what is happening before they start hunting for answers.
