Operating as usual

There are still well over a million people left on tax credits in the UK - even though millions have already been moved across to universal credit (more on that below). If you're one of them, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) started sending renewal packs on 25 Apr 2022 and the last were sent at the end of May - so you should have received a renewal pack in the post (let HMRC know NOW if you haven't). As for what to do with it, while there's detailed help in Tax credit renewals, here's a quick summary...
The renewal deadline is 11.59pm on Sun 31 Jul (6pm on Fri 29 Jul by phone), but don't wait. For some, just failing to return the renewal pack can see tax credits stop. Always check the pack, as if details are wrong or have changed (see what counts as a change) you could face the nightmare of being forced to repay cash already spent.
And don't wait for the deadline, as previously the nearer you get to it, the bigger the delay is. Exact rules of what you need to do depend on whether your letter has a red or black line.
If there's a red line... this is a 'declaration form', so check the info's correct, but even if it is, you MUST RETURN the form or renew online or via the HMRC app. Do nothing and your tax credits could be stopped.
If there's a black line... this is a 'renewal notice', so if it's correct you needn't do anything, you'll be auto-renewed. If anything has changed, inform HMRC or it can be a nightmare. Let it know on the phone, online or via the HMRC app.
You will be switched to universal credit by the end of 2024 - but should you do it sooner? Everyone on tax credits or other older benefits, such as jobseeker's allowance or income support, will be moved to universal credit before the end of 2024. Yet you can choose to switch over sooner, so should you?
- 1.4 million people are likely to be better off on universal credit. Mainly those who work and pay rent, especially if they live in a city. The gains here for some can be in the £1,000s a year.
- 900,000 people are likely to be worse off. Mainly... those who aren't in work | those who don't pay rent | self-employed people earning less than national minimum wage | those with savings of £16,000+ | some with disabilities or caring responsibilities.
Warning: Don't just apply, as you'll be moved to the new system and can't then change back, even if you find you're getting less or nothing. So go through our full step-by-step Should I switch to universal credit? guide which takes you through it, including the most important step of one-on-one help if it looks like it's worth it for you.

Once apon a time...
When we opened our doors in 1976, Gingerbread Corner was the first after-school care scheme in Europe.
We started to look after under fives in 1984, and now provide care for nearly 200 children a day, in a spacious, accessible and purpose built child-care centre.
Providing a safe and fun learning environment for children aged between three months and 11 years, with experience caring for children with disabilities and individual requirements.
Many of our "ex-children" have returned as parents - and quite a few as staff members - and I can't think of a better testimonial to our services and our continuity of care.
