"Today has become known as Blue Monday, a day to acknowledge and address feelings of sadness and depression.
Most mothers have days when they feel really down. This is perfectly normal. Looking after a baby, being constantly on call and coping with the daily demands of life is not easy. However, some mothers feel low, anxious, depressed and miserable most of the time. Others are so utterly exhausted that they feel physically ill. These mothers may be suffering from postnatal depression, a debilitating illness that can spoil the experience of motherhood, interfere with the development of the mother-baby bond and put an immense strain on adult relationships.
What are the Symptoms?
Fatigue
Sleep disturbances
Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness
Anxiety
Despair
Irritability
Reduced libido
Guilt
Appetite changes
Panic attacks
Social withdrawal
Delayed attachment
Harming the baby
Thoughts of su***de
Postnatal depression can occur anytime in the first year after the birth. It is a serious condition that can result in a great deal of suffering. The first thing is to recognise the symptoms and then get help and support from friends and family members, your midwife, Health Visitor or GP as soon as possible. It can take a long time to recover from postnatal depression, but early treatment can reduce the length of suffering and its severity. [Source: Dr Lin Day article]"

When it's cold outside, it is the perfect excuse to curl up in the warm and enjoy cuddles with your baby which has lots of benefits for you and them. Babies have a biological need for close physical affection. Nothing is more important to their emotional, physical, and intellectual development than a comforting cuddle or a loving touch.
Many of the touch therapies that have been practised for thousands of years in cultures across the world are now accepted as intervention or therapeutic therapies. Skin-to-skin and massage for example, can produce positive benefits for babies with colic and constipation, respiratory and sleep problems.
These touch therapies stimulate nerves in the brain that aid digestion and are particularly beneficial for babies with feeding difficulties, and for infants with health problems.
Enjoy those cosy cuddles - the housework can wait!

"There are SO many ways you can play with your baby.
You may even be playing with your baby without realising.
Playing with your baby doesn't necessarily have to involve toys.
And it doesn't need to be a planned or prepared activity either.
Playing with your baby might include:
-playing or singing music or nursery rhymes
-reading
-showing your baby props* such as a chiffon scarf, rainbow ribbon or baby safe mirror
-tummy time activities
-splashing in the bath
The most important thing to know is that all types of play will be beneficial to your baby.
*please note that adult supervision is always required when your baby is playing with props and/or toys.

"You don’t need to put extra time aside for sensory play with your baby.
Routine activities such as feeding, nappy changing, dressing, bathing, cuddling, carrying and preparing for sleep all provide opportunities for sensory development.
Likewise, any kind of outing including trips to the supermarket, walks in the park, visiting friends and activities such as swimming all stimulate your baby's senses.
To find out more about how to stimulate your baby's sense and sensory play read our latest blog: https://www.babysensory.com/sensoryplayfrombirth
