The MMI curriculum is tailor-made by highly qualified early childhood professionals to meet children’s learning needs. It is vital that preschools offer a holistic and well-rounded program to children. MMI’s comprehensive curriculum includes core Montessori components like Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural Studies (Zoology, Botany, Geography and History) as well as supplementary enrichment components like Creative Art & Imaginative Play, Music & Movement, Sand & Water Play and Thematic-based Teaching (Earth Science, Physical Science, Life Science and Health Science), Speech & Drama and Brain Gym. Modern Montessori Pre-Schools are governed by the rules and regulations of the Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports. All of our lead teachers are trained in either the PQAC accredited Certificate in Pre School – Teaching, Diploma in Pre School- Teaching or Diploma In Montessori Method of Education. All our centre supervisors possess the Diploma in Pre School Teaching – Leadership. All teaching staff are required to go through a “Montessori Teacher Training” workshop conducted by our Montessori lecturers upon joining us. We also provide periodic professional development workshops conducted by specialists from the early childhood industry to equip our teachers with a range of new skills to handle the young leaders in our school. Providing children with a holistic and up-to-date curriculum is essential. As such, Modern Montessori Pre-School has assembled a team of early childhood experts who are highly trained and armed with many years of experience working with children to develop its curriculum. Representatives from this department will attend the annual Montessori World Conference in Europe to keep concurrent with the latest findings, research and developments by early childhood professionals from all over the world. This department is headed by Modern Montessori International Academic Director Mr. Bob Durgude, who has 20 over years of field experience and he holds a Master of Science in Child Development and Early Childhood Education. Unique MMI Program ~

As an ever-evolving Montessori institution that continually re-invents itself to keep up with contemporary times and standards, Modern Montessori Pre-School has developed and implemented many in-house programs – the most significant of which is Passport to the World, with a goal to transform children into “Citizens of the World”. In this termly program, a new country will be introduced to children – along with its history, cultures, languages, landscapes, seasons, flora and fauna, etc. Children will each be given an MMI Passport, which will be stamped by the teacher with an arrival chop at the start of the term and then with a departure chop at the end of the term. Other MMI in-house programs include News Hour, Traveller’s Palm and Speech & Drama sessions. Parental Involvement ~

Children are the pride and joy of all parents. It is Modern Montessori Pre-School’s primary aim to involve parents in the magical learning journey of their children as they play a pivotal role in children’s development. Effective communication with parents is of utmost importance to MMI, which strives to keep them updated and involved through parent-teacher meetings, children’s portfolio, monthly and termly newsletters, communication books, progress charts and festive celebrations in the school.

We all know that being culturally aware has become a very important skill which is essential in our everyday life. Showing support and promoting cultural diversity, involves talking with people to build relationships, find out how best to include them and respect their cultural needs. Valuing and respecting diversity encourages people to see differences among individuals in a positive way.
Children, since they are infants, they learn and develop through their early experiences and relationships. As children get older they begin to develop a sense of who they are and where they belong, therefore, when children develop positive relationships with other children and educators, it helps them grow into healthy and confident people. This early learning of themselves and others constitutes the foundation of their future health and wellbeing.
As part of our art project, ‘Painter of the Week’ and in collaboration with some parents of Portuguese origins, we introduced the Portuguese painter Paula Rego and as an extent, we presented Portugal to the children. These parents contributed by lending us various Portuguese ornaments, flag and books. It was a very interesting lesson where the children had the opportunity to paint the Portuguese flag, learn about the painter’s life and creations, make their own chalk drawings, explore with their senses objects made of cork and listen to the story about the Portuguese legend of the Barcelos cockerel, one of the most famouse Portuguese emblems.
All children enjoyed the lesson and the children who originate from Portugal, felt very special and extremely happy to share this lesson with their peers.

Art has always been a powerful way to express ideas and emotions. From the cave drawings, people communicated via their mark-making and images to keep a record of events, share their stories and pass information. Artists use their creations to express their feelings and convey messages of love, empathy, beauty, distress, pain as well as to provoke and challenge.
At MMI, we introduced a project called ‘Painter of the Week’, hence, we present a painter on a weekly basis, facts about their life, some of their famous masterpieces and we encourage the children to make their own creations, inspired by them.
We worked on Vincent Van Gogh and the children adored the work of art with the title ‘Sunflowers’. The teachers followed the children’s interest and based on this painting, we presented the life cycle of the sunflowers, we explored real sunflower seeds, we made an activity on addition with the seeds and the children made a fascinating copy of the masterpiece.
The second painter was Henri Matisse whose works of art led us to explore the creative world of collages. We collected pieces of paper of various colours and shapes and after choosing their favourite paintings, the ‘Dance’ and ‘The Sorrows of the King’, children made beautiful collages, accompanied by imaginative art interpretations.
Salvador Dali’s ravishing world of surrealism captivated the children’s interest. Their favourite work of art was ‘The persistence of Memory’ and they made brilliant creations. The teachers dressed up like Dali and we made iconic moustaches for the children to put on aiming to merge drama with art.
This project aims at strengthening their verbal and analytical skills, explore design, patterns, color, shading, perspective, shadows, lighting, composition, and various artistic techniques. It is impressive how exploring art can help children to view the world around them from an artists’ perspective; they get inspiration from everything in their environment and pay attention to details on objects, animals, nature and people.

The Montessori Method of education is consistent with the idea of mindfulness. The flow of the individual presentations requires the attention of the child and the adult to be focused on the immediate present. The control of error in the Montessori materials and activities aim at bringing the child’s focus back to center. The three Montessori work cycles during the day, supports the development of increased periods of focused concentration.
The Montessori education is preparing the child not just for school, but also for life. Exercises such as ‘The Silence Game’ and ‘Walking on the Line’ help the child to focus his thoughts inward and become aware of his body within the space of his environment.
The exercise on silence also develops self-control. Silence is to make peace in our bodies and minds. We help the children to stay as quiet as possible, listen to and feel the silence, as Maria Montessori describes in her 1930 lecture.
We attended the annual Montessori conference in March and one of the most interesting presentations was ‘Promoting Peace – Activities in the classroom’ by Anita Looby. We were inspired by the wonderful and insightful speech and we introduced the ‘Mind Jars’, ‘Breath Awareness Ball’ and our ‘Singing Bowl’ to support the children with various ways of learning mindfulness, meditation and concentration level improvement.

Our theme for this term is ‘Earth & Universe’ and it has been chosen by following children’s interests. The classroom environment has been equipped by Montessori nomenclature cards on the Solar system, we made Maths cards inspired by planets to support matching quantities with numbers 1-20, we did sponge painting to make a Solar system for our board and encourage ‘looking & writing’ by using planet labels and planet models. A great tactile sensory activity was making moon sand out of flour and baby oil. Children loved the feeling of the mixture and its rich fragrance which is different than the classic play dough recipe. It created brilliant cooperative/imaginative play for children. Teachers witnessed creative and imaginative play scenarios about children going to the moon and how they leave their footprints on moon sand for aliens to see and make new friends from other planets. Moreover, following the children’s great interest, we transformed the garden into a Solar System with planets, asteroids, moons and orbits, leaving laminated footprints on the ground. We talked about the lack of gravity and they imitated the astronaut’s walk. Our exploratory journey in May continued with planting seeds by using cotton and tissue paper, working with the jigsaw puzzle of the world and talking about the three elements of the world and how life depends on them. A child said “We need the keep the land clean to walk on it and build houses because if we go to Jupiter, it is a gas giant and we will go down and disappear!”.

Getting children involved in Earth Day activities was a great way to teach them about conserving, recycling and saving Earth and the environment. We held the volcano experiment with the children and they absolutely relished every minute of it! We created a volcano model with the paper-mache technique and we placed a plastic bottle in the core of it. This helped us to mimic an eruption by using red colour for the lava, baking soda and white vinegar. Children found it fascinating! Their critical thinking and ability to predict what would happen was impressive! We also created Montessori-inspired nomenclature cards for the parts of the volcano.

What a rich month in activities and celebrations! We continued our colour experimentation via science projects; the dancing milk where children observed what happens to the sensitive milk (which has fats and proteins) after a drop of dish soap was added, making secondary colours with primary coloured ice cubes, the rainbow experiment where colours ‘travel’ via tissue paper and secondary colours are created, furthermore we made rice shakers to paint rice for our language area tracing tray and we held an experiment to test materials from our environment on how absorbent they are. We introduced snack preparation and encouraged the children to use cutting/spreading knives, wavy choppers and slice-making accessories on their own under strict supervision and the outcome was impressive; all the children managed to cut celery sticks, apples, tomatoes, pears, spread butter and hummus efficiently. Brilliant fine/gross motor skills practice and simultaneously boost their confidence and independence. It was a great opportunity to promote the value of healthy eating / healthy lifestyle. This term our theme is colours/shapes & solids. Children were truly interested in our colour activities; colour wheel with pegs, mixed primary colour pairs to create secondary colours, water/baby oil coloured bottles and puffy paint creations. We also followed our children’s great interest in the book ‘Going on a bear hunt’, therefore, we made the book our core story. Children loved the audio version narrated by Michael Rosen and acting out the story while listening to it and we made a sensory tray based on the book accompanied by props. All the activities above stimulate children’s curiosity and predictive thinking as well as practicing their fine/gross motor skills, boost their confidence and absorb knowledge by hands-on activities. The Montessori Method is an approach to education which emphasises individuality and independence in learning. Maria Montessori said “Education is a natural process carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words, but by experiences in the environment.”
