Our students have now returned from a very successful trip to the 52nd annual Hague Model United Nationsā conference. Over 3,000 students from around the world had gathered in The Hague for the conference including just four schools from the UK. Our students, representing Georgia, all enjoyed the week and did really well. Everyone set themselves different targets at the beginning of the week and it was great to see them reach them. 15 Royal Russell School students attended BMUN XII. This year we represented Sudan, Iraq and China with an excellent mix of experienced and less experienced delegates who all gave position statements in their committees, and managed to either take the floor or ask a point of information. Perhaps our busiest delegate was Sam who managed to get his resolution debated in both his committee and the plenary, getting it passed in both forums. [ 78 more words ]

MiniMUN, the junior debating society which meets every week, continues to go from strength to strength. Over 30 students from Years 6, 7 and 8 attend debates each week to discuss issues which have ranged from questions like "Should Prime Ministers and Presidents be above the law?" to "Should all countries remove the death penalty?" Luke McCabe has proved to be an excellent head of MiniMUN and he chaired the big debate (with Nikita Sood) in the Great Hall on Wednesday using the room set up for our conference this weekend.

Reigate MUN 2019 20 Royal Russell students attended the 23rd Reigate MUN conference this week. We had 3 chairs, Ella Jones, Aaron Bigord and Dionne Scougul who all did an excellent job helping to chair their committees and look to support less experienced delegates. Representing Cambodia, Switzerland and China, many of our delegates were attending their first senior MUN conference. Despite this, all spoke in their committees with a number submitting amendments and taking the floor to speak. Both Izzy and Luke won outstanding delegates in their committees and Sam Hacker won Highly Commended in the very competitive Security Council.

Nine RRS students attended the Reigate Junior MUN conference last Saturday. This is a good training conference which gave our students a great opportunity to learn how to write a resolution and to get practice in debating. All of the students made good policy statements and got involved in debates. James, Lara and Toby wrote a resolution together which was debated and passed in their committees. This conference marks the end of the MiniMUN season which will start again next September with Luke as next year's head.

This year 7 students attended the 31st Dublin MUN conference. Having spent two months preparing, Megan and Ella finally had the chance to present their case at the ICJ, trying to defend accusations of Australia exploiting Nauru Islanders last century following the destruction of their island through phosphate mining. Ella and Megan did a great job as advocates but ultimately, having tried to support a seemingly morally indefensible argument, they found themselves on the wrong side of the majority judgement.
