My tutoring approach 👩🏻🏫
As September nears, I've had a number of enquiries and one of the most commonly asked questions is about my approach to tutoring.
What I love the most about private tuition is that I can make it bespoke and tailored to individuals and small groups. By using active learning methods, children are not passive learners but instead engage in their learning through interactive and hands-on activities. The benefits of such an approach include:
✅Increased motivation
✅Improved retention of information
✅Enhanced problem-solving skills
✅Boost in confidence and self-esteem
✅Better test results

🟥🟦Hands-on learning🟩🟨
Here is another method I used in today's session to help a student understand how to identify the 2D plan of a 3D shape. NVR can be tricky to master as it's not taught in schools but hands-on learning, watching videos and consistent practice will make a difference.
When I was a child, I had so many hobbies including swimming, horse riding, gymnastics, playing the piano and hockey. Gymnastics was by far my favourite and the highlight of my Saturdays.🤸🏻♀️
I love hearing about all the hobbies my students get up to in their free time such as playing the violin, football, rugby, gardening, cooking, chess and public speaking.

♦️Synonym pairs♦️
Just like the classic pairs game, students have to find matching synonyms which test both their memory and vocabulary knowledge. This one is a popular game and can be used at all levels. All my students record any new vocabulary in their notebook and then I create these bespoke learning games for them.
After a busy day of 1:1s and navigating the gridlocked roads of Bexley, Sidcup and Swanley, it's wonderful to see that I've been recommended twice by local families as a private tutor. I really appreciate it. 🤗🙌🏻✨

I received this delicious homemade stew today after one of my sessions from a lovely parent. It seems that they already know I'm a foodie 🍲🍴
Making learning fun 🧩🎲
Gamification is the use of game-like elements in teaching including points, levels, rewards and leaderboards.
There are many benefits such as boosting student engagement and motivation as well as developing problem solving skills. In every session, I incorporate at least one bespoke learning game, often at the beginning which starts the session positively with enthusiasm and energy.
Hearing from parents that their children not only learn but enjoy the games and methods I use only motivates me to ensure sessions are both fun and productive. 😊
📝Quest Assessments and GL Assessment📝
As the Bexley 11+ is now provided by Quest Assessments, there have been many questions about this new provider and how to prepare children for their 11+ in September.
What do we know currently?
✅Paper-based as before and not online
✅Paper 1: English and VR
✅Paper 2: Maths and NVR
✅Final score comes from 50% verbal ability, 25% numerical ability and 25% non-verbal ability
✅No minimum score in each subject, just an overall score
✅Top 180 students will receive a place in their preferred grammar school
How do we access Quest mocks?
There are free familiarisation materials on Quest's official website. However, to access full-length mocks, parents must have an Atom subscription.
Can we continue to use GL Assessment materials?
Yes, on the whole, it seems that the topics remain the same but there are some slight differences. There is a stronger focus on logical reasoning and problem solving, particularly in the maths section. In order to prepare children well, they need to familiarise themselves with Quest's question styles.
The Kent and Medway 11+ remain unchanged and GL Assessment is still the provider.
Do reach out if you have any further questions 😊

✂️⭕🔷 Spatial reasoning practice 🔷⭕✂️
In today's session, we worked on fold and punch questions which can be very tricky. To help visualise the pattern and how it would look unfolded, we used a hole punch and cut out the shapes. Students really enjoy this fun hands-on approach to NVR.
