Day 2 of Piano Camp! Reinforced our learnings from Day 1, then explored new rhythms, new notes, and transitioning from coloured dots to notes on the grand staff! These students have worked really hard, and performed a few pieces (and a duet!) for their adults at the end of Camp. Congratulations! 👏

Showcasing our new skills to parents at the end of Piano Camp Day 1!

Composition - using note lengths we learnt earlier in the day. Bells, piano, and crayon drumsticks 😂

Finger number learning for our fun introductory activity.

Innovative ways to score a chord! Rainbow note heads! 🌈

Yesterday at Piano Camp we talked about some rudimentary rhythm - crochets, minims, and crochet rests. We also explored the notes of the C pentascale. This exercise is designed to encourage pitch exploration and composing pentascale melpdies, but these students took it a step further and also assigned rhythm to their chosen pitches. Afterwards they played their first compositions for each other and we thought of names for their works. Music learning is more than sitting at the piano and talking through new concepts, we need to put them into practise and be creative with them!

Day 1 of Piano Camp done! Introducing ourselves, and getting to know our finger numbers.

Landmark notes - C and F, finding them on the piano, boomwhackers and handbells.

Musical alphabet water splash games. Water balloons and water pistols to keep us cool.

Rhythm 101: crochets, minims and crochets rests, copying rhythms on the drums and testing each other.

Create your own rhythms and play them. Writing notes to solidify visual indentification and audiation.

Landmark note check (with cute resin animals) and located the CDE and FGAB groups.

Piano key identification using our musical alphabet knowledge, and intro to stepping up and down the piano keys.

Literally stepping up and down - one person plays the tune, the other steps up and down the staff, using our new found knowledge of the C pentascale!

Composing our own pieces using the C pentascale, and rhythm elements learnt earlier.

More composition.

Ending with testing our compositions out on the piano, and playing simple pieces with all our new skills. It might be piano camp but it’s a whole lot more than that!

CURIOSITY was the word of the day for today’s piano lessons. My piano tuner is coming this week so for once the piano doesn’t have a lamp, numerous pencils and books on the top, so we took the opportunity to be curious. Have you ever looked inside the piano whilst playing? Can you see how it works? How does the sustain pedal change the mechanisms inside?
