Predicting skills shortages!
Giving evidence to the Work and Pensions Select Committee for their latest inquiry âYouth employment, education and trainingâ, IERâs Dr Emily Erickson highlighted evidence from SkillsPulse, a Europe-wide study predicting skills shortages.
đ"Mismatch is multi-dimensional, multi-casual and it can be systemic ⌠its very rarely only a problem of an individual lacking skills. Itâs going to reflect job design, terms and conditions, âŚhow skills are utilised, labour market matching.â
đ"If youâre offering below market wages, or bad jobs, you might actually have a hard time filling it that has nothing to do with skills, and more about the quality of the job on offerâ
đ"Youth unemployment is by no means simply a problem of young people lacking skills - we canât reduce it to that. It's far more complexâ

đOther countries have maintained a focus on new labour market entrants
đThere is a relatively high cost to employers in England of apprenticeship schemes
