If you have a child with SEND, the government’s new Health and Wellbeing Bill is something that you need to be aware of.

What this means for you as a parent is that if your child has got an EHCP, their name may need to be placed on a register. You may also need permission from the local authority to take your child out of school.

So, for example, if your child is struggling and they’re autistic — we know that many children with autism suffer from sensory overload in schools. They can find the environment absolutely overwhelming and may do much better in a smaller setting or even through home education.

However, under these new proposals, you could need the local authority’s permission to be able to remove them from school.

The government have allocated £1.8 billion towards SEND over three years. However, when you actually break the maths down, that works out at around £600 million per year across more than 32,000 schools in the country.

In reality, that equates to roughly just over £18,000 per school. Depending on where you are in the country, that may only cover around half a teacher’s salary or perhaps one teaching assistant.

So many children with SEND under this new legislation are likely never to have their needs fully met.

If you do have a child with SEND, I really, really encourage you to research these proposals properly, speak to other parents, and contact your local MP.

Struggling with Maths… or Something More? It Could Be Dyscalculia.

When a child finds reading hard, we often think dyslexia.
But when maths feels impossible, it’s often misunderstood.

Dyscalculia is a learning difference that affects how someone understands numbers and maths concepts. It’s not about intelligence, effort, or laziness.
A child with dyscalculia might:
➖ Struggle to tell the time
➖ Find it hard to remember number facts
➖ Mix up numbers or reverse them
➖ Feel anxious or overwhelmed during maths tasks
➖ Have difficulty with money, measurement, or sequences
And the biggest sign?

They may believe they’re “just bad at maths.”
