☕ New Coffee & Geography 'Espresso': Nepal Floods, Unseen Disasters and Climate Change

In this special episode, Alistair Hamill and I respond to the devastating flooding affecting Nepal and Tibet following a major ice-and-rock avalanche on 26 August 2026.

This is still an unfolding disaster, and both the humanitarian picture and scientific understanding continue to develop. We therefore approach the evidence cautiously while exploring:

- The developing evidence for a rapid slope failure involving glacier ice and rock
- How ice, meltwater, rock and sediment combined into a fast-moving debris flow and flood
- Why Himalayan warming, glacier loss and permafrost degradation provide important climate context without yet proving direct attribution
- How settlements, infrastructure and political borders shape vulnerability
- Why hazards crossing the Nepal-Tibet border require effective transboundary monitoring and communication
- The distinction between a natural process and a human disaster
- Why certain events become embedded in global memory while others receive limited attention
- The 2023 Derna floods and the 2018 Volcán de Fuego eruption as examples of disasters shaped by governance, inequality and uneven mobility
- How geography teachers can use personal testimony, local expertise and named stories without making - suffering voyeuristic
- Why the experiences of affected communities must remain important after international media attention moves elsewhere

The episode includes links to developing scientific information and humanitarian appeals from the IFRC, British Red Cross and UNICEF.

A reminder that the Natural History GCSE consultation closes on 4 September.

I’ve shared my response and a guide for others who may want to respond, adapt or challenge the points.

My key ask is that Natural History GCSE should be more than another exam about nature. It should be fieldwork-rich, rooted in local places, inclusive by design, and connected to school climate action plans.

That means valuing field journals, notebooks, species records, observation over time, biodiversity, adaptation, climate education, green skills, and climate literacy as safeguarding.
