Poem of the week: Whoso List to Hunt by Thomas Wyatt 19/10/2025

For anyone who is studying the A Level English Literature AQA A specification, here is an article that explores the first poem in the Paper 1 love anthology, Thomas Wyatt’s “Who so list to hount, I knows where is an hynde”. In my opinion, this poem has been a great choice for every single Paper 1, Section C task since 2017. It is equally applicable to questions that ask for either a negative or a positive exploration of love, simply because though the object of the poet’s love is taken by a more powerful male, the speaker’s love remains. This article looks at the historical context behind the poem and explores each section of the sonnet in some detail.
