✨ Seeing the maths, not just memorising it ✨
Every child learns differently, and for some children, seeing and touching the maths makes all the difference.
This lovely learner has a SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) need, which can sometimes make traditional, language-heavy learning more challenging. But when we use resources, something amazing happens — the maths becomes visible, hands-on and meaningful. Instead of just hearing numbers or instructions, she can build, move and see the maths in front of her.
Using simple cubes like this helps break numbers down, group them, and really understand what is happening. The progress she has made has been incredible and I am so proud of how far she has come. 🌟
Over the next few days I’ll also be sharing some other photos of the wonderful ways children learn maths in my sessions. One includes a game of Snakes and Ladders with a child who can sometimes be reluctant to do “classroom style” learning — yet through the game we explored counting, number recognition, turn taking, and so much mathematical thinking without it feeling like a lesson at all! 🎲
Because maths doesn’t always need to look like worksheets… sometimes it looks like playing, building, exploring and discovering.
And that’s when the real learning happens. 💛
