🌿 Greater Trochanter & Acupressure – Understanding the Hip

The greater trochanter is an important anatomical landmark located on the outer upper part of the femur. For massage and holistic therapists, identifying it accurately is essential for understanding the muscles and structures surrounding the hip.

Several important muscles attach around the greater trochanter, including the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. The area is also closely related to deeper structures involved in hip movement and stability.

In acupressure and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lateral hip and gluteal region also contain important therapeutic points. One of the best known is Gallbladder 30 (GB30 – Huantiao), traditionally associated with the hip, buttock and lower limb.

At Holistic Way Academy, students learn that effective holistic therapy requires more than memorising individual points. Understanding anatomy, accurate palpation and appropriate pressure are essential for applying techniques confidently and safely.

Our practical training helps students develop their knowledge of anatomical landmarks, muscles, acupressure points and hands-on techniques.

Swollen, heavy, tired legs are one of the most common complaints we see in practice. Learning effective Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques can make a real difference to your clients' comfort and wellbeing.

Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, specialised technique designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid through the body. When applied correctly, it may help reduce fluid retention, improve tissue health, promote relaxation, and support recovery after prolonged standing, travel or certain medical procedures, where appropriate.

At Holistic Way Academy, students learn:
• Safe and effective lymphatic drainage techniques for the legs
• The anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system
• Correct hand pressure, rhythm and sequence
• Indications and contraindications
• How to integrate lymphatic drainage into professional massage treatments

Mastering these techniques allows therapists to expand their skills and provide evidence-informed, client-centred care for people experiencing swollen or tired legs.

Professional training. Small class sizes. Hands-on learning.

30/07/2026

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is one of the most effective manual therapy techniques used by skilled massage therapists to improve movement, reduce pain, and restore normal muscle function.

Unlike passive stretching, MET involves the client actively contracting a muscle against gentle resistance provided by the therapist. This activates the nervous system, allowing muscles to relax more effectively afterwards, improving flexibility and reducing excessive muscle tension.

MET can help:
• Improve joint mobility
• Reduce muscle tightness
• Restore normal movement patterns
• Decrease pain and stiffness
• Improve posture and functional movement
• Support faster recovery after injury

At Holistic Way Academy, our students don't just learn how to perform Muscle Energy Technique. They learn when to use it, when to avoid it, and how to combine it with sports massage, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and neuromuscular techniques to achieve the best clinical outcomes.

Understanding the science behind techniques like MET transforms a massage therapist from someone who simply follows routines into a practitioner who can assess, reason clinically, and deliver effective, personalised treatments.

This is the difference that high-quality massage education makes.

The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is one of the most important muscles in the neck, yet it is often overlooked during massage treatments.

In this short video, we're demonstrating safe and effective techniques for working with the SCM to help reduce muscle tension, improve neck mobility, and relieve discomfort that can contribute to headaches and postural strain.

Understanding the anatomy, palpation, and correct treatment approach is an essential skill for every massage therapist.

At Holistic Way Academy, our students learn not only where muscles are located, but how to assess them, treat them confidently, and integrate these techniques into a professional clinical treatment.

Small details make a big difference in the quality of your massage.

✔ Use reinforced hands, forearms and elbows safely and effectively
✔ Adapt treatments to suit each client's individual needs
✔ Improve mobility and help reduce muscular tension

The Calf Pump Mechanism in Sports & Holistic Massage

In this video, our students are practising the Calf Pump Mechanism, an important massage technique taught as part of our **Level 3 Diploma in Holistic Body Massage** at Holistic Way Academy.

The calf muscles are often referred to as the body's "second heart" because they play a vital role in assisting venous return and supporting healthy circulation. Through specific massage techniques, therapists can help stimulate blood flow, reduce muscle fatigue, and promote recovery after physical activity.

During our course, students learn not only how to perform massage techniques safely and effectively but also the anatomical and physiological principles behind them.

Our holistic approach teaches therapists to view the body as an interconnected system, understanding how improving circulation, reducing muscle tension, and supporting recovery can positively influence overall wellbeing.

🌿 Learn practical hands-on techniques
🌿 Develop a strong understanding of anatomy and physiology
🌿 Gain confidence in professional massage practice
🌿 Study with experienced tutors in a supportive learning environment

Whether you are starting a new career or expanding your therapy skills, our accredited Level 3 Diploma provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to become a professional massage therapist.
