Good morning all!

We had a busy day yesterday starting with a media workshop where we worked with Jacob to learn the skills of creating a media film. He taught us camera angles, how to record and how to use the light to our advantage. We got to go around the venue in search of our perfect interview and we found James! James is a frame runner and was busy warming up in the athletics venue but he came over and spoke with us. Ruth did a great job interviewing, Aminata shot the film, Freddie handled the sound and the microphone and Daniel directed! We had to go and edit the film back at base and then present to the group. We showed amazing team work and communication to get the job done and I hope you have had a look at our film on our page.

Lunch was sandwiches and the best flapjacks and then off to the tennis to volunteer. Unfortunately the tennis was just finishing so we didn't get to work but we were able to watch the basketball 3X3 which had a dj and it was really fun to watch the games.

The obstacle course was next and we had a lesson on how to balance, swing and climb. Daniel chose to observe and give us pointers which was a very sensible decision!!

After dinner the YST staff set up games and a chill out space and the students had the choice of what to do. Mark and I sat back and gave them some space and it was great to see their confidence in talking to the other young people and making their own choices.

Another busy day planned, just about to go to breakfast and then off to volunteer at the basketball and athletics.

Freddie, Aminata, Daniel and Ruth have been working hard in this film at the School games in our media workshop. The students planned, shot and edited the film.

Our pupils at residential are doing us all proud - yesterday the group left Marjorie at 6am and got to Loughborough at 10, straight into work training from 10.30–5.30. Dinner then opening ceremony.

They are working hard presenting, talking and working with the other students.

We are incredibly proud of them all

One of our superstar mums! When she’s not busy with CASPA or supporting her son she’s helping out our PSA team with their events. Well done Xuxa!!

Meet Xuxa. 💚

Xuxa has been part of the CASPA family since 2016, when her youngest was diagnosed with autism. CASPA became a lifeline, not just for her son, but for her whole family.

"Finding CASPA was a turning point in our journey. To be around other families who just get it. As a parent of a child with autism and learning difficulties it is always a fear that people won't love and care for your child or understand them as you do. I have met some wonderful humans through CASPA who make me feel reassured that my son will be loved and understood even when I'm not around. It's honestly more than a charity, it's one big family."

A few years ago, she started volunteering with our young adults on Monday nights. She was nervous at first.

"I hadn't been around many adults with autism. Plenty of children but not adults. After a couple of weeks I felt completely at ease, they were welcoming and trusted me to support them in whatever way they needed. Volunteering at CASPA isn't like going to work, it's more like hanging out with friends and feeling part of a wider community. We have so much fun!"

The moments that stay with her are the quiet ones, the ones you only see if you show up week after week.

"Lots of our members come to their first session feeling lots of anxiety and are apprehensive to join in. It is wonderful to watch these barriers be broken down over the weeks and see them becoming less in their own world and more involved in the CASPA world."

If you are thinking about volunteering but haven't quite taken the step, Xuxa has this to say:

"Volunteering at CASPA is not only rewarding and completely self-fulfilling, it is also a chance for you to become part of a wider community and form friendships with people that you may have otherwise never met."

We are grateful to have you on the team, Xuxa. 💚

We were so incredibly delighted to receive a giant stack of beautiful thank-you letters from the amazing students at Marjorie McClure School

Recently, we had the privilege of donating a Road Crossing teaching aid to support their road safety learning. Seeing the direct impact through their words (and some pretty fantastic artwork!) reminds us exactly why we love supporting our community.

A huge thank you to the students and teachers for taking the time to send these our way. You’ve put the biggest smiles on all of our faces!
