Using Resources and Writing Online: Easier Than You Think
One of the biggest misconceptions about online tutoring is that it’s somehow harder to write, work through questions, or use resources compared to in-person lessons. But in reality, it’s not harder — it’s just different. And once students get used to it (which usually takes about two minutes!), it often becomes second nature.
With the tools we have today — like interactive whiteboards, shared screens, online worksheets, and even simple things like typed answers or drawing with a mouse or stylus — working online can be just as fluid as working on paper. In fact, it often gives us more flexibility. I can pull up past papers instantly, zoom into questions if a student needs a closer look, or annotate in real time alongside them.
For students who love technology (and most do), online learning can even feel more natural. They’re already used to interacting with screens — whether that’s through school, games, or videos — so adapting to online tutoring is usually much quicker than adults expect.
And if a student prefers pen and paper? No problem. They can still work things out in their notebook beside them and let me know their method & I can replicate it on screen. This even enables further discussion & almost forensic levels of analysis so we can see exactly where any tricky points in the question may be.
There are always ways to make the learning comfortable, personalised, and effective. I always leave it up to the student to decide - do they want to use the software or do they want to use pen & paper? Either way works just as well for me.
At the end of the day, it’s not about the method — it’s about the progress being made. And online, that progress can be just as real, just as visible, and just as exciting.

Dispelling the myths regarding online tuition
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether I will tutor face to face. Many parents consider this (along with experience, qualifications & competency) as a key requirement when looking for a tutor. I completely understand why lots of parents feel this way. The belief is that face to face tuition is better as it should be more personable which should therefore translate to more impactful or using pen & paper rather than a screen is more reliable. However, in my experience, online tuition works just as well— and in many aspects it’s even better. In this series of articles I’m going to explain why.
Strong relationships are still possible — even through a screen
A lot of people worry about the human connection getting lost online. They really shouldn’t. If the tutor is personable, warm, attentive and encouraging, that bond forms just as quickly. How quickly depends mainly on the student’s personality. Whether it’s in person or online it often takes several lessons for the student to warm up but once they do then the relationship is cemented - it makes no odds whether they’re physically in the same room or not. I’ve had students I’ve only ever met online who still light up the screen when they join the session — we laugh, we work hard, we make progress.
On the other hand, I’ve had children in my class at school (who I’ve taught for a whole year) where I can count on one hand the amount of conversations they’ve wanted to voluntarily have. This just means that the tutor needs to work harder & explore further to find the ‘in’ - what the hook is that interests, motivates & engages the student.
When you’re looking for a tutor you want someone who has the subject knowledge but also the ability to teach it in an impactful way. Furthermore, a good tutor should be similar to a coach & a mentor who is helping the student meet & overcome the challenges that they face. That should be achievable whether through a screen or in person - the talent of the tutor & the relationship formed between student & teacher is key & the medium that it is achieved through should not be a factor.

After years of tutoring through high-commission platforms, I’ve decided to take a more independent route and create this page to connect directly with families who are looking for support.
I’ve worked as a year 6 teacher for 15 years and have been an 11+ tutor for the past 5. Many of my classroom students each year sit the 11+ and seek extra help — so tutoring became a natural extension of what I already do day-to-day. Over the years, I’ve supported hundreds of children through their exams, and I now specialise in helping children prepare for grammar and independent school entrance exams, as well as building their confidence in English and maths more broadly.
While I’ve tutored through Tutorful for several years (where my profile and reviews are still available), this page is my way of reaching families more directly — without the middleman. It also gives me the space to share my insights, success stories, and tips that might help other parents navigating the 11+ or KS2 journey.
Whether your child needs a confidence boost, targeted prep, or someone to make the tricky parts of learning stick — I’d love to help.
P.S. You can still view my full profile and 5-star reviews on Tutorful here:
