Our PE trainees are now several weeks into the course and are already developing their own teaching identities. Here's what they've been getting up to:

💬 "Over the past few weeks, we've really enjoyed getting to know one another, as well as getting to know the teacher versions of ourselves; thinking about how we want to come across to students and the kind of teachers we aspire to be.

We've been using the Teaching WalkThrus books to explore behaviour management strategies and, importantly, how these can be applied in PE. During our subject pathway session this week, we brought these ideas to life by acting out classroom scenarios and discussing how we'd respond in different situations."

It's fantastic to see our trainees building confidence, refining their practice, and reflecting on the impact they want to have in the classroom.

Train to teach with GITEP's school-centred initial teacher training courses

Last week, our secondary trainees attended an introduction to their first PGCE assignment, delivered by our PGCE partner, Bath Spa University.

The session gave trainees the opportunity to meet senior lecturers Andrew and Beca, gain an insight into the academic side of their training, and learn more about the support provided by the university during the training year.

A key strength of the GITEP PGCE programme is the close integration between school-based training and the PGCE. Over the coming months, trainees will draw on their classroom experience, teaching practice and professional reflections to inform their first assignment.

🎄 It might only be 1st October, but our Design & Technology trainees are already getting into the festive spirit! 🎄

During a recent metalwork session, trainees put their skills to the test by creating aluminium Christmas trees while gaining hands-on experience using metal lathes.

A key part of our Design & Technology teacher training programme is specialist health and safety training, ensuring trainees develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to work safely in workshops and support learners effectively.

From mastering machinery to making festive creations, it's all part of becoming a great D&T teacher! ⚙️✨

📚 A mystery gift for our English trainees!

To encourage reading for pleasure and help our trainees explore the world of young adult literature, each trainee was gifted a mystery YA novel to enjoy this term.

We can't wait to hear their recommendations, reviews and reflections as they discover new authors, genres and stories that will inspire their future classroom practice.

It was great to see so many mentors from both our primary and secondary programmes at our new mentor training sessions on Friday.

Mentors play a vital role in the success and development of our trainees and we are committed to providing them with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make a real impact.

Next week we look forward welcoming 60 mentors from Gloucestershire schools to our first online training session of the year – a fantastic start to the mentoring journey ahead!

Starting Strong: Our Primary Trainees' First Two Weeks

We are delighted to welcome our new Primary trainee teachers to the GITEP programme.

Over the past two weeks, trainees have taken part in a range of induction activities and Professional Studies sessions, helping them settle into their training year while building strong relationships across the cohort.

They have explored the principles of effective teaching and learning, considering how evidence-informed approaches can support pupils to make strong progress from the very start of their careers. They also took part in their first induction session at the University of Gloucestershire, enjoying the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the campus, connect with university life and explore the facilities.

It's been a fantastic start to the year, and we're looking forward to supporting this talented cohort as they continue their journey towards becoming excellent teachers.

Centre Professional Studies Round Up 📚

GITEP trainees have completed their first Centre Professional Studies programme after a busy and inspiring week of learning.

From Cognitive Load Theory and evidence-informed practice to classroom assessment, professionalism, ethics and the role of AI in education, trainees gained valuable insights from colleagues across the GITEP Partnership.

A very warm welcome to our newest cohort of trainee teachers!

Our first day has been full of energy, enthusiasm and plenty of smiles, even if the weather had other ideas! We’re excited to support this wonderful group on their ITT journey and look forward to a successful year ahead.
