I want to express my sincere gratitude to the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

My clinical schedule was very rich and diverse, allowing me to observe several specialized areas, including Cornea, Rapid Access, Paediatrics, Glaucoma, Uveitis, and Cataract Surgery in the operating theatre.

It was a valuable, insightful, and engaging experience. I am extremely grateful to all the doctors and consultants who were always willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Daily sessions included detailed discussions of complex and interesting clinical cases.

This experience has significantly enriched my professional perspective and will definitely help me improve my daily clinical practice. Thank you, SOE, for this opportunity!

Wiktoria Bosy-Gąsior, Poland SOE Observership Report Moorfields Eye Hospital, London UK
First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the European Society of Ophthalmology for awarding me the SOE Observership Grant and giving me the opportunity to undertake an observership at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London—an exceptional and truly inspiring institution. This observership exceeded my expectations and proved to be an immensely valuable experience, both professionally and personally.

During my three-week observership in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, I had the opportunity to join medical teams in their daily work across a range of specialist paediatric clinics and in the operating theatre. Each day brought new and valuable learning experiences.

I was fortunate to spend this time with many wonderful people, including highly experienced consultants and the fellows working alongside them. Everyone welcomed me with great warmth and kindness.

I would especially like to express my heartfelt gratitude to two exceptional consultants: Dr Naz Raoof and Miss Maria Theodorou.

Throughout my observership, they both made me feel extremely welcome and supported. They carefully discussed the cases we encountered, explained their clinical reasoning and patiently answered all my questions concerning the diagnosis and management of each patient.

Thanks to Miss Maria Theodorou, I now feel much more confident when assessing patients with nystagmus. I gained a clearer understanding of how to initiate the diagnostic pathway and approach the subsequent management of these patients.

I was particularly grateful for the warmth and positive energy that Dr Naz Raoof brought to our sessions in the neuro-ophthalmology clinic and the operating theatre. I had the opportunity to observe a wide range of fascinating strabismus surgery techniques in both paediatric patients and more complex adult cases, including those associated with underlying endocrine disorders.

By the end of my observership, I felt deeply moved by how much I had learned, how many fascinating cases I had been able to observe and how warmly I had been treated throughout my stay. It was such a wonderful experience that I truly did not want to leave London or say goodbye to the remarkable people I had met.

Receiving the SOE Observership Grant and completing my placement at Moorfields Eye Hospital at such an early stage of my ophthalmology career will undoubtedly prove to be a turning point in both my clinical and academic development. This experience has shown me how many opportunities lie ahead, and I am immensely grateful that I decided to apply for the grant. I am equally grateful to the SOE for selecting me as a grant recipient and making this unforgettable experience possible.

EMYO 2026 was a huge success following months of planning, the meeting gave our YO community a fantastic opportunity to network, learn and continue in growing a truly supportive and energised community. Many thanks to Thea for making this possible.

Observership report Otakar Dušek, Czech Republic –Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Germany
During my two-week observership at the Department of Ophthalmology, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, University Hospital Halle (Saale), Germany’s largest ocular trauma center, I focused primarily on vitreoretinal surgery and ocular trauma, observing pars plana vitrectomy for retinal detachments, endophthalmitis, expulsive subretinal hemorrhage, dislocated lens material, and complex proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Many cases represented “oculus ultimus” situations, often performed under general anaesthesia, providing a unique opportunity to see cutting-edge approaches in posterior segment surgery. I also observed complex anterior segment procedures, including cataract and glaucoma surgery in patients with aniridia due to PAX6 mutations, cornea and limbal stem cell transplantation, amniotic membrane grafts, excimer-assisted keratoplasty, and lacrimal surgery including endoscopic DCRS.

The department’s structured educational program was highly inspiring. Each morning began with a concise five-minute synopsis on an ophthalmic topic—ranging from NASA research on spaceflight-associated eye changes to retinal cell biology or environmental impacts on eye health—followed by updates on the latest developments in ophthalmology. Weekly grand rounds, outpatient clinics, and multiple operating theatres allowed me to closely observe complex surgical cases and clinical decision-making. Discussions with senior surgeons and colleagues provided invaluable insight into managing challenging trauma and vitreoretinal cases. This combination of daily synopses, observation of diverse procedures, and expert commentary made the experience highly instructive and motivating for a young ophthalmologist.

I am particularly grateful to Professor Arne Viestenz for his surgical expertise, human approach, and leadership as President of the International Society of Ocular Trauma, as well as to all colleagues and staff who welcomed me and generously shared their knowledge. Meeting Professor Viestenz at last year’s SOE Trauma Wetlab and observing the SOE grant application process during this visit provided valuable insight for my role as Czech national representative of SOE Young Ophthalmologists. I also thank the SOE for making this observership possible.

Beyond the hospital, Halle offered rich cultural experiences, including Handel’s birthplace and the Nebra Sky Disc, preserved in one of Europe’s oldest archaeological museums, along with historic salt production and one of Germany’s oldest universities, rounding out a memorable and highly educational visit.
