Post 16 Parents & Carers Guide The page provides a comprehensive guide to Parents & Carers, to support with decision making at key transition points in education
Today's announcement regarding a proposed ban on social media for under-16s is likely to spark significant discussion in the coming weeks and months.
As a therapeutic Alternative Provision, we see both the opportunities and challenges that social media presents for young people.
Many of the children and young people we support have experienced anxiety, bullying, social isolation, exploitation risks, or difficulties managing online relationships. We recognise the concerns around harmful content, excessive screen time and the impact social media can have on wellbeing.
We also know that adolescence is a critical period of brain development. The areas of the brain responsible for impulse control, emotional regulation, decision-making and risk assessment continue to develop well into early adulthood. As a result, young people can be more vulnerable to the effects of algorithms designed to capture attention, social comparison, online pressure and instant gratification.
At the same time, social media has become a significant part of many young people's social world. For some, particularly those with SEND, EBSA or social anxiety, online spaces provide a sense of belonging, identity and connection that can be difficult to access elsewhere. If access to these spaces is reduced, it will be important that we consider what replaces them.
As professionals, we believe that any reduction in online social spaces must be matched by increased investment in youth services, community opportunities, mentoring, mental health support and safe places where young people can build meaningful relationships, develop confidence and feel a sense of belonging. Young people need connection, whether that is online or offline.
Rather than focusing solely on restriction, we believe it is equally important to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and resilience to navigate the digital world safely. Digital literacy, critical thinking, healthy boundaries and trusted adult relationships remain essential parts of safeguarding and healthy development.
Whatever changes may come following consultation and legislation, our focus will remain the same: supporting young people to make informed choices, develop healthy relationships with technology, stay safe online, and engage positively with their communities.
We encourage parents, carers, educators and policymakers to consider not only what young people may be stepping away from, but also what opportunities, services and support networks we are providing for them to step towards.

⚽The World Cup Has Arrived⚽
Each of our young people has had the option to randomly select a country to support in the World Cup, and we're using the tournament as a springboard for learning!
Through a range of Creative, Maths, English, Geography and History challenges, they'll be exploring countries, cultures, religions, national dishes and fascinating facts from around the world.
We've even got our very own football pundit... Ember will be predicting England's games throughout the tournament!

As a therapeutic relational provision, we believe that supporting young people starts with investing in our own learning too. Whether we’re exploring attachment, trauma, neuroscience, emotional regulation, behaviour, or wellbeing, there is always something new to learn and reflect upon.
Learning isn’t linear – even for adults. The more we understand, the better equipped we are to meet young people where they are, build meaningful relationships, and provide the support they need to thrive.
Our staff are encouraged to choose books that support their professional development and strengthen their therapeutic practice. Even better, team members can add notes, reflections and key takeaways to the books, creating a shared learning community where knowledge grows with every reader.
Because the best practitioners never stop being learners.

🤩We’re really happy to share a new Preparing for Adulthood roadmap for neurodivergent young people who aren’t accessing social care.
We shaped this together with the Partnership Delivery Team in South Essex and SNAP Charity, with wider partners involved in the early stages of the conversations. We used the real questions families ask us at events and through our feedback wall to guide what went into the roadmap.
It brings together the key things families often want clearer guidance on as their young person moves from early teens up to age 18, including education choices, health transitions, independence skills and money matters. It’s a simple, one page guide you can keep at home and use as a quick reminder of what to think about at different ages. It also links with the Post 16 Guide and Events Calendar if you want to look into any of the topics in more detail. You can find these here: https://www.essexopportunities.co.uk/post-16-parents-carers-guide/post-16-parents-carers-guide
We hope it helps things feel a little easier to navigate. 💛
