Our 2026/27 Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are getting underway, with nine groups running across our region this week! 🎉

We're excited to welcome back schools we've worked with previously, as well as new schools beginning their Teaching for Mastery journey.

Earlier this week, we told you about our SKTM Primary Teaching Assistants Programme. But don't worry, we haven't forgotten about our secondary teaching assistants, we have a programme for you too! 👋

Designed for secondary teaching assistants who work predominantly with students in KS3 maths classrooms, or who lead intervention sessions with groups of students, the Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM) – Secondary Teaching Assistants Programme supports TAs to develop their mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogy.

Participants will attend the equivalent of four days of sessions across the academic year.

📣 Calling all primary schools - If your school has a nursery, you may be interested in Maths Champions, a fully funded professional development programme for nursery practitioners.

Developed by the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA), Maths Champions helps practitioners develop their pedagogy and practice to support children’s early maths through play, everyday activities and routines.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in, join Sue Evans, the NCETM’s Director for Reception and Early Years, for an online information session delivered jointly with the NDNA. Find out how the programme works, when cohorts start, who is eligible and what’s involved.

📣 We still have places available on our Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics - Primary Teaching Assistants Programme for this academic year.

This programme supports primary teaching assistants to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths and to develop distinct pedagogical decision-making, which will impact on their practice when supporting maths.

Participants will attend the equivalent of four days, where they will work collaboratively on maths tasks. Between sessions, participants contribute to their online community, complete school-based tasks, and share their observations through discussions with peers.

It was fantastic to welcome a new cohort of Secondary Mastery Specialists to their first session of the new academic year. Led by our Assistant Maths Hub Lead Rebecca and with input from the NCETM , participants explored The Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery and discussed their favourite maths tasks.

This two year programme supports secondary maths teachers to become experts in teaching for mastery and lead change within their schools. We can't wait to see this cohort's progress throughout the year.

Strong mathematical foundations start early. 🌱

That’s why we’re delighted that applications are still open for our
Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (Reception Teachers) Programme.

This revised programme forms part of the Best Start in Life strategy for developing maths practice in Reception and will support teachers to:
⭐ Deepen their understanding of early mathematics
⭐ Strengthen their practice across the Reception curriculum
⭐ Develop approaches aligned with teaching for mastery
⭐ Support all children to make good progress

Who can take part?
The programme is open to Reception teachers, including those who have previously completed an Early Years SKTM Programme.

Reception Teaching Assistants can also attend alongside their Reception teacher, creating an excellent opportunity to develop shared knowledge and practice.

A brilliant start to the new academic year!

Our Assistant Maths Hub Leads came together for their first collaboration day, sharing ideas, shaping plans and getting excited about the year ahead. 💡

We were also delighted to welcome Claire who joins us as a secondary Assistant Maths Hub Lead this year- welcome to the team! 🎉

And a special mention to Jason for keeping everyone fuelled with his homemade muffins! 🧁

The Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Groups offer schools the opportunity to continue their teaching for mastery journey through a collaborative network of maths leaders and teachers.

Participants work together to develop effective leadership practice, observe live teaching for mastery lessons, engage in collaborative lesson design, and refine systems that maximise impact across their school.

✅ Fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme
✅ Access to additional Focus Themed Work Groups to support specific areas of interest and development

If your school has previously participated in a Development, Embedding or Sustaining Teaching for Mastery Work Group, this is the next step in your mastery journey.
