Angela Rayner’s announcement this week to pull back and pause council reorganisations across England because of "legal advice" and court challenges from other counties raises serious questions for us here in Surrey.
While places like Essex, Norfolk, and Hampshire get a breathing space review because their local councils fought back, Whitehall has confirmed that Surrey is "unaffected" and will be pushed ahead regardless.
That should make every resident in our town sit up and pay attention.
We are being told we can’t stop because our legislation passed earlier, shadow councils were elected, and the process is "too far down the track". However, nothing can justify being locked into a process just because of an arbitrary timeline, while the Government itself admits the underlying process in other counties was legally flawed.
This is exactly how major mistakes happen in local government. Some of the worst planning, infrastructure, and financial decisions in our town’s history didn’t happen by accident. They happened because a group of people in power failed to challenge the consensus, went along to get along, and refused to stand up on behalf of the people who elected them.
If East Surrey and West Surrey Councils are genuinely going to go live in April 2027, we cannot allow our local representatives to just nod things through.
Whether it is inherited borough debts, planning decisions, or protecting frontline services, we need representatives who are willing to go against the flow, ask the uncomfortable legal and financial questions, and ensure our town isn't quietly sidelined in the name of administrative convenience.
On one hand we can lead the way on the other hand, why should we but if we do are we prepared ?
