Behaviour is changing in our schools.
More and more educators I work with are saying the same thing:
“The needs of our children feel different now.”

And if that’s true — if the children are changing — then our role as educators has to change too.

We cannot keep responding to today’s children with yesterday’s expectations.

That doesn’t mean lowering standards.
It means deepening our understanding.

It may mean:
• Relearning what regulation actually looks like
• Reflecting on what behaviour is communicating
• Letting go of practices that no longer serve children
• And bravely asking, “Is this still developmentally appropriate?”

Which brings us to a question many settings are quietly wrestling with:

How appropriate is whole-class carpet time — and the expectations we place on children during it?

Is it realistic to expect:
• 30 children to sit still
• To listen passively
• To regulate their bodies
• To override sensory needs
• To process language-heavy input
…all at the same time?

For some children, carpet time is manageable.
For many others, it is overwhelming.

And when their nervous systems can’t cope, what do we often see?
• Fidgeting
• Calling out
• Rolling
• Disrupting
• Withdrawing
• “Challenging behaviour”

What if those behaviours aren’t defiance…
but communication?

What if the behaviour is telling us:
• “This is too much.”
• “This doesn’t feel safe for my body.”
• “I need to move.”
• “I can’t process this right now.”

This isn’t about removing structure.

It’s about designing environments and rhythms that support children’s nervous systems, not constantly push against them.

Because when children feel regulated, they don’t need to communicate through behaviour.

And when adults feel supported to adapt practice — not just manage behaviour — everything begins to soften.

In Finland, kids go to school for only about 4–5 hours a day, yet they are among the smartest in the world!

Schools focus on quality learning rather than long hours. Shorter school days help children stay focused, happy, and stress-free.

For younger kids (grades 1–2), school is around 20 hours a week, about 4 hours daily. By middle grades (3–6), it goes up to 23–24 hours per week. In upper grades (7–9), students attend 30 hours weekly, roughly 6 hours a day.

Why does it work so well? Teachers in Finland are highly trained and trusted to plan lessons. Students get less homework, have long breaks, and plenty of outdoor play.

Schools also start later, so kids get enough sleep. The focus is on well-being, creativity, and balanced learning, not just exams.

This system proves that less can be more. Shorter school days with smart teaching lead to high achievement and happy learners.

“You don’t teach someone to swim while they’re drowning.” 🌊💙

When our children are in the middle of a meltdown 😭, especially those with additional needs, it can feel overwhelming for everyone. But in that moment, their brain is in survival mode 🧠⚡. They aren’t being “naughty” or “defiant”—they’re drowning.

No amount of reasoning, discipline, or teaching will land when a child is in that state 🚫📖. Just like you wouldn’t give swimming lessons to someone who’s already under the water 🏊‍♂️💦, you can’t teach coping skills in the middle of a storm.

What our children need first is calm 🤲, safety 🛟, and understanding 💛. That’s how we help them come back up for air 🌬️. Once they’re regulated and feel secure again 🫶, then is the time to talk, to teach, and to gently guide them towards safer ways of coping next time 🌈.

This doesn’t mean we let everything slide 🚷. Boundaries and learning still matter. But the order matters too—compassion first 💖, teaching second 📚.

It’s not always easy (especially when we’re tired and stretched ourselves 😮‍💨), but remembering this can make such a difference—for us, and for them 🌟.
