Beneath the Surface: Unlocking the Secrets of the Thomas More Painting
This September, visitors will have a rare opportunity to experience the Thomas More painting like never before. Using infrared reflectography and a cutting-edge imaging technique known as MA-XRF (Macro X-ray Fluorescence), the team at Nostell is uncovering clues to the 434-year-old artwork's history and creation.
These advanced scans can reveal what lies beneath the visible layers of paint, exposing hidden details, earlier compositions and changes made by the artist that have remained unseen for centuries. Visitors will be able to explore these discoveries firsthand and gain a fascinating insight into how technology is helping us better understand this remarkable portrait.
Throughout the month, a series of talks will offer behind-the-scenes access to a process that is rarely seen outside specialist conservation and research facilities. This special experience is included with admission to the house.
Please see the Nostell NT webpage for more details.
