✂️ Gross motor skills ✂️

🌟 Gross motor skills are so vital in a little person’s development. It helps improve attention and memory, impacts balance and coordination and forms the basis for fine motor skills.

❤️So much of our classes involve a variety of gross motor skills. Be it running, jumping, hopping, throwing, catching, using pom-poms or dancing to the latest crazy song, you will be sure to find them during a Phonics with Robot Reg session! ♥️

🐄 We used the farm animals to have a small world farm. Great for vocabulary and sound exploration!

🌟 Fun Phonics Friday 🌟

😊 We love tiddlywinks in our house!

✂️ Not only is it great for fine motor skills but can be used for a bit of secret learning too!

🌟 We use the Alphablocks letters but you can just write them out on paper or post it notes.

❤️ Spread out your letter cards on the floor and flip your counter to see where it lands.
- what letter is it on/near?
- can you think of a word starting with this sound?
- go and find something in the house starting with this sound.

✂️ Top Tips for Improving Writing and Formation ✂️

📝 Did you know that before your child picks up a pencil to write, they need to complete lots of fine motor activities.

💪 This is to make the muscles in their hands strong enough to support a pencil and form letters neatly.

Check out my top 3 activities to help develop your fine motor strength:

1️⃣ Sensory marking - fill a tray with something that can easily move - sand, flour, salt, rice - and give your child some tools that will make marks with (paint brushes, sticks,or just their fingers!)

2️⃣ Threading - this is great for developing and perfecting the pincer grip which is needed to correctly hold a pencil.

3️⃣ Pre-writing marks and drawing - allow your child to free draw using crayons, pens and chalks. Different lines and shapes are great as they form the basis of our letters (and writing on an easel will help to strengthen the shoulder muscles, which is also important for improving writing).

🌟 There are so many activities to help build your child’s motor skills but my top tip is to keep it simple!

❤️Quick, easy activities before or after a meal with things you have around the house.

🌟We had beads and string- stick some tape over the end to stop it fraying 😊

🐥We dressed up as ducks and visited to duck pond to try and catch some.

🌟 This is great for co-ordination and motor skills, but also good for counting back from 5.
