Not quite a tutorial this evening, more a rambling on where throwing meets turning as you progress as a potter.

It’s not about ‘re-inventing’ the pot by trimming the life out of it. Instead, by focusing on throwing well and I’d even say with integrity*, your turning becomes the most wonderful treat.

Showcase what you have.

And yes, it can be quick… on average (without me waffling) say 2 mins a piece?

*as a dear friend once said: ”integrity is what you have when no one is watching”

SCALE: learning to throw BIG 💪

Kilograms are a perfectly good metric system, but at The Ceramic Garden we prefer sausages.

One sausage = one length of pugged clay that fits nicely in our storage fridge = roughly 3.5–4kg of clay. Very technical.

Three days, over three weeks, we wanted to give our potters the confidence to go BIG. Rather than chucking a sausage on the wheel and hoping for the best, we slowed everything down and took throwing at scale apart, step by step.

By slowing it down and understanding what was actually happening to the clay at each stage, everyone achieved more than they thought they could. And by the end of the course, each person had thrown roughly 75–100kg of clay 🤯

For context: one whole bag is 12kg.

If you would like to find out when our next SCALE workshop is pop a 💪🏼 in the comments!

What a wonderful day with the incredibly talented Joelle Davis ! 🐭🦊🦉

Our handbuilding animal workshop was packed with creativity and plenty of cake. Joelle generously shared her techniques and guided us through creating our own unique ceramic animals.

By the end of the day we’d built a whole army of wonderfully individual little critters, each with its own personality. We learnt so much and now comes the hardest part… waiting to take them home after they’ve been fired!

A huge thank you to Joelle for such a brilliant workshop. 🤎
