The Heritage Horticulture Skills Scheme has announced a series of bursaries for its LANTRA Level 3 Award in Heritage Horticulture following a successful launch of the qualification at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.
At least 12 bursaries are on offer at a number of the scheme’s member gardens including Aberglasney, Dyffryn Gardens, St Fagans and those run by Newport Council.
The qualification – LANTRA LEVEL THREE HERITAGE HORTICULTUJRE AWARD – has been developed by HHSS and is a practical and hands-on qualification for specialists in heritage horticulture. It is the first award of its kind designed to combine a real understanding of plant life and gardening with a thorough knowledge of history.
It was launched officially at RHS Malvern in the company of celebrity chef and heritage horticulture supporter, Raymond Blanc.
Trainees who take up the bursary – which is available for a temporary period only - will undergo a three to four month course. They should expect to start in either June or July in order to be completed within the allocated timeframe of November this year. The financial support works out at £785 tax free per month per trainee. After this period, while the award will still be available, the bursaries will not.
Trainees are expected to undertake around 80 hours of agreed and regular guided learning and assessment over a period of up to four months at a sponsoring site of heritage horticulture interest. They will be required to submit a workbook on their key projects evidencing their skills and accomplishments with video, diary and photographic evidence.
