SEISMOSAVVY

The reason for choosing a Responsive Web Design (RWD) for SEISMOSAVVY is because earthquake safety is a critical platform for protecting lives. I believe safeguarding lives is a fundamental human right, and it’s not ideal if access requires specific devices, app installations, or equipment.

While some features may require special devices, SEISMOSAVVY aims to provide similar effectiveness across all platforms. We strive to ensure that earthquake education services are accessible on all platforms.

3D browsing on web

If people don’t have an Apple device, there’s no need to worry. Users can use a computer to directly browse models on the SEISMOSAVVY website. *(Currently, in BETA 2.0, users need to click once more to access the desktop version of the model.)

Users can easily navigate and zoom in on models using a mouse to explore changes and features in every corner.

Graphic module design

In the design, I’ve extensively used graphical modules for an intuitive user experience, encompassing earthquake simulations, disaster prevention information, safety responses, and travel registration.

How to achieve the goal while protecting privacy

In this system, there is no need to register the names of international travellers because rescue operations do not discriminate based on nationality, race, or gender.

Therefore, we only need to know the locations where people are trapped. Information such as nationality, gender, age, etc., is presented to government or rescue units in a de-identified manner.

Using mobile devices like iPhone or iPad, users can directly browse earthquake simulations without the need for installation. The simulations adjust lighting, colours, and shadows based on the user’s location. In tight spaces, users can shrink the models and place them on a table for viewing. It’s even possible to capture earthquake moments seamlessly. In large spaces or open areas like plazas, users can scale simulations up to a 1:1 real-life ratio.

Three ways to experience

First: Using the computer version to directly control earthquake magnitudes, simulating earthquake scenarios under different conditions, and providing corresponding response measures.

Second: Using an iPhone or iPad in AR mode to view earthquake models of different magnitudes, and even capture exclusive earthquake moment photos to save in the album.

Third: Using Apple Vision Pro to directly experience XR effects, immersing oneself in the experience or scaling down to inspect safety zones in detail.

Earthquake Safety Guidelines - iPad

In today’s society, tablets have become essential in most educational systems. Children can use graphics to understand how to protect themselves in different earthquake scenarios.

The platform also provides guidance on how to stay safe in various situations and highlights unsafe actions post-earthquake. The content is designed to be understood without the need for reading text.

Government agencies, especially rescue teams like fire departments, almost universally equip themselves with tablets. Therefore, under the GOV rescue mode, rescue personnel can clearly identify locations where assistance is needed.

Safe Response

One of the greatest concerns following an earthquake is being trapped in buildings or remote areas, with no one knowing exactly where the trapped individuals are. This situation is especially critical for international travellers who may not be able to contact their families promptly, or whose whereabouts might remain unknown until their visas expire, often after the critical 36-hour “golden rescue period” post-earthquake.

To address this, international travellers can pre-register their information and specify their intended destinations. If they fail to respond within a designated time frame after an earthquake, their approximate location in the city or region will be publicly disclosed to facilitate rescue efforts by government agencies.

Visual design of earthquake warning

Typically, earthquake alerts are issued for magnitudes of 4 and above, as countries or regions often have excellent seismic technology and citizens are trained to respond appropriately, such as slowing down when driving. However, for international travellers who may not have experienced earthquakes, SEISMOSAVVY lowers the alert level. Although a magnitude 3 earthquake is generally safe, unnecessary panic can lead to danger.

In this interface, I clearly display critical information, including GPS coordinates, so that those needing assistance can accurately convey their current location.
