Why does my child draw all these marks for 45 − 27? 🤔

They’re not making maths harder—they’re learning why it works.

In this strategy:

* 45 is shown as 4 tens and 5 ones.
* To subtract 27, they cross out 2 tens and 7 ones.
* Since there are only 5 ones, they trade 1 ten for 10 ones (regrouping).
* After subtracting, 1 ten and 8 ones remain = 18.

This visual approach builds number sense and helps children understand regrouping instead of just memorising the borrowing steps.
