💚Pressures, emotions and resilience. Counsellor breaks down men’s mental health.

Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month (June) is a powerful prompt to break down the stigma that can prevent men from speaking about their emotions and seeking support when they need it, and to challenge the messages that tell them to stay silent.

💬 Grab a coffee and take a few minutes out of your day to watch the video below as Kieran, our Clinical Lead Coordinator, reflects on the pressures many men experience around emotions and resilience. He explores the idea of conditions of worth, and allowing ourselves to be seen, talk openly, and create the connections that help us feel supported.

❔How do you support your own wellbeing, or encourage others to talk during challenging times?

Ella, a learner at the Blackwood Centre, celebrated her final day with us today before she sets off for the United States on Monday , a milestone she once thought was impossible.

Ella joined the programme in November 2024, full of ambition but unsure where to focus her energy. She knew she wanted to travel, but choosing a direction felt overwhelming.

As a care leaver living independently, Ella has always shown resilience, but she also faced moments of uncertainty. With limited support around her, she regularly used the centre’s pastoral services to stay grounded. In February 2026, she came to us feeling lost and unsure of her next steps.

Working together as learner and learner coach, we explored her passions, challenged her to think bigger, and built a plan that matched her dream of seeing the world.
The biggest barrier? Funding. Ella had no savings, no travel budget, and no idea where to start. So we sat down together, researched funding opportunities, and applied for every relevant pot available.

Her determination paid off. On Monday, Ella will board a plane to America, where she’ll spend three months working at a summer camp supporting children from underprivileged communities, travelling solo, stepping into a new culture, and proving to herself just how far she can go.

This is what happens when a young person uses difficult circumstances as fuel for ambition. Ella dreamed big, worked hard, and achieved something extraordinary.

From learner to assistant leader 🌟

When Tianna joined the JGW+ programme at Itec Merthyr, her positivity and determination immediately stood out. Over the past few months, she has grown in confidence, become the centre’s first learner representative, and is now thriving in her placement doing what she’s always dreamed of 💙

Her journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen with the right support, encouragement, and dedication.

We’re so proud of everything Tianna has achieved and this is only the beginning 👏
