From your JCR Presidents concerning the recent Guardian article.
Dear members of the JCR,
In light of the recent popularity of “Sh1t Hallsome”, we just wanted to remind the JCR to treat each other with understanding and kindness at this stressful time.
There is no problem with good-spirited fun, but we feel the tone of some recent submissions has become excessively confrontational and unproductive.
Best of luck to those doing exams or about to start, and remember to reach out to your tutor, DoS, your welfare officers or the college wellbeing team if you need any support.
Much love from your JCR Committee

REMINDER:
Don’t forget to vote in the Reading Week Referendum by 5PM TODAY!
The Reading Week would be 5 days in the middle of term when no no work can be set and no scheduled teaching take place.
The campaign believes would allow students to rest and recover from the intensity of term, explore topics we’re interested in in more depth, or get more involved in extracurricular activities.

Dear members of the JCR,
The unfolding events in Ukraine and their horrifying human cost have come as a profound shock to us all. Media coverage of Russia’s invasion has been deeply distressing and our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as they face armed conflict in Europe on a scale unseen in most of our lifetimes.
We are mindful that the developing situation will be particularly troubling for and have practical impacts on members of the JCR with relatives and friends in the affected regions, primarily in Ukraine but also in nations close to the conflict who will be affected by the fall out from the crisis. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the support available:
MENTAL HEALTH
As your JCR our priority is ensuring the wellbeing of our student community. We encourage anyone in need of support to make use of the college welfare system:
- You can reach out at any time to the wellbeing team ([email protected]) to access counselling on a short- or longer-term basis. Our welfare officers are also always available for a chat and to provide further information on accessing support (Nancy [email protected] & Shihab sa2071).
- You can also talk to your tutor, particularly if you feel difficulties arising will affect your work.
- Although under considerable pressure, the UCS also provides mental health support on a university level (https://www.counselling.cam.ac.uk/studentcouns/students).
- The CUSU Student Advice Service is also on hand to provide confidential, free, and impartial advice (https://www.cambridgesu.co.uk/support/)
STUDENT SOCIETIES
- The Ukrainian Society, who organised yesterday’s gathering on King’s Parade, (https://www.cambridgesu.co.uk/organisation/10311/) is also providing information on practical ways to support the Ukrainian community. CUSU is creating a resource bank with more information and ways to donate to those impacted by the war directly.
COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE
- While we would hope for a tolerant and mutually supportive response to the situation, there is always the possibility that wholly unacceptable discrimination and tension can arise from situations such as these.
- To this end, it is important to remember that the actions of the Russian government do not necessarily reflect the feelings of the Russian population, many of whom will be equally horrified by the invasion unfolding in their country’s name. See statement from the Russian Society ().
If any party experiences discrimination, we highly encourage you to launch a complaint. There are several channels that can be taken, outlined below – these can be rather complicated, so we encourage you to reach out to a JCR Committee member for advice if you feel comfortable enough to do so.
1. Firstly, you can seek preliminary advice from a Tutor, DoS or the Junior Bursar, who may be able to offer assistance or advice, and can help you make an informal complaint involving another member of Trinity Hall.
This must be made in writing by you or a nominated representative (College member/CamSU officer).
Your complaint will then be sent to the Senior Tutor. The Junior Bursar or Senior Tutor will acknowledge receipt of the complaint and investigate as soon as practicable, aiming to provide a considered response within 20 days of its receipt.
2. If the complaint remains unresolved after the informal procedure has been completed, you can ask for the matter to be referred to the Master (currently Acting Vice-Master) and should do so within 30 days of receiving the outcome from the informal stage.
If you have provided clear reasons for the formal complaint to be put forward, the Master will appoint a Junior Members Committee (JMC) to undertake a full assessment, with further investigation if necessary – this will not involve anyone who has had personal involvement in the matter of the complaint.
One or two Junior Panel Members will be asked to sit on the JMC, provided you (as well as the Senior Tutor) approve this.
There are procedures to appeal decisions made by the JMC under the formal procedures which can be found in the Student Handbook (section 7.1.5).
3. If you would prefer not to complain through this system, there are of course other options. You are able to launch a complaint through the university complaints procedure, and information regarding this process is found on the following website:
https://www.studentcomplaints.admin.cam.ac.uk/harassment-sexual-misconduct/reporting-harassment-bullying-discrimination-or-sexual-misconduct?fbclid=IwAR0A4vDo74F9Az4p3TkARLn3QBpGuBtPe1KWfOu5qZYfuR_Fn4Jl3daqvew
4. Additionally, there is also the option of reporting the behaviour as hate crime to the police:
Cambridge Constabulary - https://www.cambs.police.uk/information-and-services/Hate-crime/Hate-crime?fbclid=IwAR38iTi_ebs8Fc2hEI31jsIjk0M0J9OmMZjqEu8fMnnxT6xje1HPMcWV_RA
This is a situation in evolution and the instability is likely to be drawn out. The College and the JCR are always here to provide as much support as possible to anyone affected by these events.
In solidarity,
Trinity Hall JCR Committee
