Fellows Spotlight 💡

Ruth Watson is an Associate Professor in African History and has been a Fellow of Clare since 2010. Her interest in African history was shaped by spending part of her childhood in the ancient Yoruba city of Ile‑Ife.

Her current research project, Crowds in World History, examines the crowd as a distinctive global social and historical phenomenon. She draws comparisons from a wide range of moments from protests led by emancipated slaves and riots in early 20th century South Africa to modern movements such as Black Lives Matter and Nigeria’s EndSARS.

Conceiving crowds as more than simple aggregations of people, her work explores how people become conscious of being part of a crowd, and how in turn such crowds develop their own social momentum.

Celebrating our Centenarians🌟

As the College marks its 700th anniversary, we looked back through our records to find alumni who are celebrating a remarkable milestone of their own — turning 100 this year.

These individuals would have arrived at Clare in the early 1940s, when life at the College looked very different to how it is today. Cohorts of students and Fellows were very small, with the admission of women still three decades away, and the College was led by Sir Henry Thirkill, who had served successively as Senior Tutor and then Master since the 1920s.

Wartime preparations shaped daily routines and academic life, with rationing affecting meals in Hall, though some Cambridge traditions remained in place, with students still finding moments of joy with friends from punting on the Cam to rowing with Clare's Boat Club.

A few alumni who turned 100 this year generously shared their memories. You can read the full stories of Clare’s centenarians in the article linked below in the comments🔗

Congratulations to Clare alumna Professor Helen Wilson (1991), who has been appointed as the next Director of Cambridge's Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences!

We are delighted to announce that Professor Helen Wilson has been appointed as the next Director of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, leading the Institute for five years from 2026 to 2031.

Professor Wilson is Professor of Applied Mathematics at University College London (UCL), where her research focuses on the flow of non-Newtonian fluids. She has also served as Chair of the INI’s Scientific Steering Committee, giving her a deep understanding of the Institute’s mission and its distinctive role in supporting mathematical research.

Her appointment marks an important moment of continuity and ambition for INI, as we continue to bring together researchers from across the UK and around the world through focused programmes, workshops and long-term visits.

We also warmly acknowledge Professor Ulrike Tillmann, who will take up her next role as president of the IMU after five years of outstanding leadership here in Cambridge.

Please join us in welcoming Professor Wilson to her new role.

Fellows Spotlight 💡

Dr Michael Angerer, the Newby Trust Junior Research Fellow at Clare, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the UK's leading learned society for historians.

Michael's work focuses on medieval English literature and its place in the multilingual literary landscape around the North Sea. His research combines approaches from literary history, translation theory, and manuscript studies to explore how literary traditions were shaped by cross-language contacts and interactions.

On his appointment, Michael said "It’s a privilege to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. My research on medieval English literature and its connections across the North Sea is highly interdisciplinary, so this is an encouraging recognition of the historical relevance of my work. I look forward to contributing to the Society’s efforts to champion the value of history across disciplines."

Michael joins a distinguished group of Clare members who are Fellows of the Royal Historical Society, including Professor David Chambers, Dr Patricia Fara, Dr Elizabeth Foyster, and Dr Toby Wilkinson.
