Welcome to the ARU Philosophy Society; a completely open society, dedicated to the ideals of free speech, philosophical discussion and debate. Our aims are to promote and encourage free speech and philosophical thinking, not just academically, but also in everyday life. We want to encourage students that are not studying Philosophy at university to experience Philosophy first hand and hopefully de

velop a strong interest in thinking philosophically. For students that are studying Philosophy we also aim to provide an environment that will allow students to help one another improve their abilities and to create an environment in which members feel that they can ask one another for advice, both with university, and otherwise. While this society is formed primarily to create an environment to discuss philosophical issues, we also wish to create a social and friendly environment for all. Each month there will be up to three meetings, on the first, second, and third Monday of each month, to be held in a local establishment starting at 6pm:

Student Presentation Night

The first meeting of the month will be a presentation given by a student on a given topic, followed by a series of questions from the audience, a short interval, and finally a group discussion. Structured Discussion Night

The second meeting of the month will be one or more structured discussions, on a topic submitted by a member and chosen either by the committee or by general membership vote. Guest Speaker Night

The third meeting of the month will be similar to the first on format, though the speaker will be a guest lecturer. This may be a lecturer from ARU, or possibly an external guest. This meeting will be dependent on whether a guest lecturer is available to attend, and could be replaced by an open discussion night, depending on the popularity of both nights. Additional Events

Ideally, the society would organise an outing of Philosophical importance on a termly basis. For example: a visit to the Royal Institute of Philosophy (2nd March 2016)

Some new exciting upcoming events! The philosophy society will be streaming and having a philosophical debate about stranger things on the 25th of September and Avengers endgame on the 9th of October.

This Sunday we will be streaming inception and having a philosophical debate about the themes of the movie after the stream. The movie will be streamed on an app called ‘rave’ which is available on IOS and Android. To get the link to join, message the society on any of its social media platforms. The Philosophy society is back!

We are reinventing the society with a new logo, new cover photo and new cabinet members! Below you will see the new Socrates logo for the society, the cover photo which features our owl mascot and an introduction to all the cabinet members. No one has nominated themselves for the 2020/2021 PhilSoc committee. If anyone still wishes to put themselves forward to be on the committee, they can do so by contacting the Students Union. All societies require a president and a treasurer, so if these two positions are not filled for the next academic year, then the Philosophy Society will not run. However, if we do not have a committee by the start of the year, and any new students wish to restart the society, this can also be done by contacting the Students Union/visiting their website: https://www.angliastudent.com/societies/ideas/adoptsociety/
