Are you training your bladder to be tiny? â If you head to the loo every time you feel a tiny âscratchyâ sensation, youâre having a yogurt pot wee (about 100ml).
The Problem: Going every hour teaches your bladder itâs only this big. Then, when you actually need to hold it for a meeting or a movie, you end up sweaty and uncomfortable.
The Fix: Aim for the âFlowery Mugâ size! âď¸
* This is roughly every 2â3 hours.
* Your bladder gives you a friendly nudge instead of a panic.
* No rushing, no doorstep dashâjust a calm, controlled trip to the loo.
You are not alone, and this can be fixed. Pelvic health physiotherapists are experts in bladder retraining. If youâre local visit our Cambridge clinic or check our blog for more tips!

Did your mum always tell you to wait until you were bursting? She might have been wrong! đ¤
âWait Until Youâre Burstingâ is BAD Advice! đđ˝.
While your bladder can hold a medieval pint, doing this regularly during the day can overstretch your bladder and strain your pelvic floor muscles. Save the âpint-sized weeâ for when you wake up in the morning!
At ProPelvic Physiotherapy in Cambridge, UK, and in pelvic health clinics everywhere, physios help you understand your body so you can stay in control without the âdoorstep dash.â đđ¨ It can be fixed!

Happy Sunday! âď¸ If your morning coffee has your bladder screaming at you, this one is for you. The âOne In, One Outâ Rule âď¸
What goes in must come out! To keep things comfortable, you ideally want one âmug-sizedâ wee for every mug you drink. If you let two or three mugs âstack upâ before heading to the loo, youâre looking at a pint-sized emergencyâand nobody wants that kind of rush on a Sunday!
A mug-sized bladder is a happy, patient bladder. Itâs happy to wait while you finish your brunch or stand in a queue, saying: âIâll have a wee when youâre ready.â
You are not alone, and bladder urgency can be fixed. Pelvic health physiotherapists are the experts at retraining your bladder so you can stop scouting for the nearest toilet.

Is your bladder a Mug or a Yogurt Pot? âď¸ Ever feel like youâre âbustingâ to go, or heading to the loo âjust in caseâ? Have you noticed the variation in what your bladder can hold??
In Part 1 of our new series, weâre looking at healthy bladder capacity:
* The Yogurt Pot (100ml): Too early! This is often just a habit.
* The Mug (200-400ml): The âsweet spotâ where you are in control.
* The Pint Jug (500ml+): Busting! âemergency/overnight onlyâ zone.
What can you do to make your bladder happy - take more notice of how it is filling up!
Understanding your bladder capacity is the first step toward better pelvic health.

Stop the doorstep panic before you even get home. đď¸đ In our final tip of this series, weâre talking about âworking upstream.â Itâs not just about what you do at the door; itâs about the habits you build earlier in the day.
If youâre often desperate the moment you stand up from your car, your bladder was likely already fullâyou just didnât feel the weight of it until you moved.
đŚŚThe Upstream Strategy - Listen to the signals đŚ
â
Donât ignore that âhalf-fullâ message before you leave the office or the shops.
â
Plan ahead: Going before a long commute home can prevent the frantic doorstep race.
â
Fix the system: Changing these small habits helps retrain your bladderâs hypersensitivity.

Is your bladder shouting at you? đŁď¸đŚIf you only use quick âon-offâ pulses when you reach the front door, your bladder is going to win that argument every time.
To get through the door dry, you need a conversation, not a shout. That means holding your pelvic floor for 20-30 seconds to silence the panic. âąď¸
Most people skip the âslow holdsâ because they take too longâbut they are the secret to building the endurance you actually need in real life!
Pro Tip: Use an app like Squeezy (shown here!) to keep you on track.

Tighten or Relax? Which one wins the front door battle? đď¸âď¸ In Part 2 of this series, weâre looking at what to actually do when that bladder panic hits.
There are two main physical âargumentsâ you can have with your bladder:
* Tightening your pelvic floor for 20â30 seconds sends a âstay calmâ signal to your bladder muscle. đ
* Releasing your pelvic floor (the pretend-to-tie-your-shoelace-trick) Dropping into a deep squat and relaxing can actually break the sensation of urgency and give your bladder more space. đ
Which one works for you? Try both today and let us know in the comments! đ
