One of the many tricks used by scammers, is to scare you into thinking you owe money, by pretending they are from your phone or electricity company, your kid's school, your bank or even taxes! A common way to get you to give them what they want is by threatening you with more fees if you don't pay right away!

Is it Fake News?

Look for invisible clues
What tactics are being used to make you believe the message?
Shocking headlines that are designed to make you have an extreme emotional reaction such as anger, outrage, sadness, shock & disbelief are signs of messages with FALSE information.

What part of the story are you not being told?

The text or video might not state direct lies, but important parts might have been kept out of the content on purpose.
Even if no lies have been told, keeping out key facts is the same as lying!!!

Is there a hidden or unmentioned meaning?

With False Information content it's NEVER "what you see is what you get".
There is always a hidden message, agenda or ulterior motive.
Fake News is a lot like the common optical illusion picture where you can either see a woman's face or a tree.
Fake News aims to distract you from a fact that hurts the argument of the creator of the message, or the person/people behind the message.
It can also be tricking you to believe or do the opposite of what the truth / facts would make you do.

How and where could you get more info about the untold stories?

Asking these questions about the information you are reading or watching is a great start. To get definitive answers to your questions it is best to find a reliable source to confirm if the information is legitimate.
Go to Google & search if other respected news sites are also reporting the story.
Click on the link from the news website, which are safe & have fact-checked information such as Reuters, Rappler, BBC, CNN.

What does Fake News look like?

'FAKE NEWS' can have many shapes and forms, making it tricky to recognise. Below are examples of popular ways that False Content is hidden:
* OPINIONS PRESENTED AS FACTS - just because someone (journalist, news anchor, politician, family member, friend, etc.) has A STRONG OPINION about something, DOES NOT MAKE IT A FACT. Ask or look for fact-based evidence to back up their argument
*Badly researched content
*Content that is not fact-checked
*Satire (exaggerated information, usually shown in a funny way, which people start believing and sharing online as facts)
*Memes (popular Internet pictures used to make a joke about a topic that people start believing)
*Hoaxes
*Scams

Especially during elections there is a lot of fake news going around.

Some is designed to confuse and mislead voters on purpose.

Other starts as rumours that become seen as the "truth" because no one has fact-checked it.

Creators of messages with Fake News frequently use tactics that involve SHOCK & SCANDAL, designed to upset you or make you angry. It is like bait.

The purpose of Fake News content is to spread it to as many people as possible.

Because they know that if you are SHOCKED, ANGRY & EMOTIONAL, you are more likely to like, share or comment on the content.

By engaging you have fallen for the bait and are spreading the Fake News content for the creators, which means more people will watch or read false information about a topic.

But there are simple things you can do to find out whether the content you are reading or watching is
Fake or Fact.

How can you know what to believe on the Internet???

What is Fake News: False stories that look like news, that are spread on the internet or using other media, usually created to influence political views or as a joke.

"Fake News" can be used as a general term to describe different types of wrong information or outright lies, such as "Misinformation" & "Disinformation".

Does it matter what type of Fake News it is?
It depends. The main point to remember is that ALL Fake News always makes someone believe things that never happened, or that something false is true!
