RADICAL or RESPECTFUL...

I think Radical Candour is a great concept, the idea of caring personally while challenging directly is powerful... BUT
..for me personally, the thought of being frank makes me uncomfortable.
It can sound a bit like “brace yourself… this might hurt.” And in high-pressure environments like veterinary practice, that can sometimes do more harm than good.

That’s why I prefer to talk about Respectful Candour.

For me, this means:
🗣️ Speaking openly and honestly
⏰ Addressing issues early
⚖️ Balancing clarity with empathy
😻 Preserving trust and dignity in the process

It’s not about avoiding difficult conversations — it’s about having them in a way that feels safe, collaborative, and constructive. For example:Instead of saying“We need to talk about how you handled that client.”
I might say
“I’d like to share some feedback on that client interaction, and hear your thoughts too.”

The message is the same, but the approach is different. One can feel like a confrontation; the other, a conversation. We can be clear without being cruel.
Honest without being harsh.
And make candour the norm, without making it radical.

The long road to a PhD is very real and I would love your help.

I am back at my desk today working on my research into the non technical or human skills that veterinary nurses use when monitoring and maintaining anaesthesia. The goal is to build a non technical skills taxonomy that will support RVN training and I am about halfway there.

To finish the focus group stage I need a few more RVNs and Vets who can talk about task management and how they cope with stress and fatigue in practice. The focus group takes 90 minutes and is online. If you are able to take part please DM me or email [email protected]

Thank you!

Last week was pretty special, it was the first time I have met my wonderful PA Helen in person.

Even though we have had many online meetings, text messages and emails over the last 18 months whilst working together it was amazing to finally get to give her a big hug and say thank you in person!

Helen supports Claire and I professionally and personally, ensuring the smooth running of Being Human and Silver-Mac HQ and I'm sure everyone who she has interacted with her would agree, she is an essential member of the team!

Thank you for all you do Helen, it makes a massive difference and ensures that Being Human delivers on our mission and purpose. I am so grateful for all your hard work, help and friendship.
