The University of Buckingham Law School were delighted to collaborate with Machins Solicitors LLP and 42BR Barristers to host a very insightful Mock Employment Tribunal Hearing event at our Vinson Centre last week 👨‍⚖️💼

The event took the form of an enactment of a hearing in the Employment Tribunal in a case of gross-misconduct dismissal of an employee who had publicly criticised their employer’s flagship product on social media.

Solicitors from Machins Solicitors LLP acted out the roles of the dismissed employee and the managers responsible for the dismissal process, and the audience were able to watch them being cross-examined by barristers Safia Tharoo and Jason Braier from 42BR Barristers. The judge, who was played by David Rushmere, Employment Partner at Machins Solicitors, then delivered a judgment in this fictitious case.

The Law School was very pleased to see the event attended by a large and diverse audience of local businesses and HR professionals as well as staff and students from across various faculties and departments at the University. The event was an invaluable opportunity for The University of Buckingham law students to witness advocacy in action and to gain practical insight into the process and decision-making at an Employment Tribunal hearing.

A small group of selected students also had the opportunity to assist the lawyers with pre-trial case preparation, drafting Skeleton Argument and a draft Judgment for the event and having the opportunity to discuss their work with the lawyers prior to the mock Hearing.

We are very grateful to David Rushmere of Machins Solicitors and Dr Michael Salter 42BR Barristers for this wonderful collaboration and to Julie O'Shea (Clinical Legal Education Manager) and Dr Jessica Walsh (Lawyering Skills and Competitions Lead), at The University of Buckingham’s School of Law for assisting with the organisation of this event.
