Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a difficulty with using words and sentences. It starts in childhood and doesn't go away.

Not enough people have heard of DLD, and so lots of people go through life not knowing they have DLD. This means they don't get the support they need.

When a person learns that they have DLD and those around them learn about it too, it can be transformational.

Places are still available at a special event aimed at showcasing what a career in Speech and Language Therapy has to offer. The workshop is open to individuals living in Neath Port Talbot or Swansea and is aimed for students in Year 10 and above, or anyone who may be considering Speech and Language Therapy as a career option. The event could form part of the work experience requirement for students in school or college.

The annual event, organised by Swansea Bay University Health Board’s Speech and Language Therapy Department will be taking place on Thursday 19th October 2023.

There are a limited number of places so if you are interested in attending this event or have any further questions please contact Kayleigh Griffiths on 01639 862694 to register and request an information pack.

Strategies for supporting children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD):

When teachers know about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and have simple strategies to support a student it can make a big difference.

These 'pencil case strategies' were designed so a high school student could show it to heir teachers. Especially important at high school, as there are so many teachers.

TOP TIP: make these with the individual young person so their views are included.
