BACK HEALTH PROGRAMME (1–1 COACHING) 🧍‍♂️

Back pain is one of the most common things I see — and it often stops people doing the things they enjoy.

Stiffness, aches, loss of confidence in movement… and once it starts, people tend to move less — which makes it worse.

This is a 6-week Back Health Programme designed to get you moving better, feeling stronger, and more confident in your body again.

This is NOT general PT

This is a focused, assessment-based programme where we work specifically on:
Reducing back pain and stiffness
Improving mobility and posture
Building strength safely
Restoring confidence in movement

Who it’s for:

Ongoing back pain or discomfort
Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting
Fear of movement or “putting your back out”
Previous back issues that haven’t fully resolved

What’s included:

Full initial assessment (movement, mobility, strength)
6 x 1–1 coaching sessions
Personalised exercise plan
Progressions based on your response

👉 Weekly focus
Week 1 – Assessment & Movement Patterns Identify limitations, posture, movement habits
Week 2 – Mobility & Control Restore movement (hips, spine, breathing patterns)
Week 3 – Stability Foundations Core control, spine support, coordination
Week 4 – Strength Development Safe loading, building resilience
Week 5 – Functional Movement Lifting, bending, daily activities
Week 6 – Progression & Future Plan Re-test, confidence, long-term strategy

👉 £349 for the full 6 weeks

Just to be clear: This programme focuses on improving how your body moves and functions through targeted exercise, which is exactly what I specialise in as a Level 4 Exercise Referral Specialist, including specific qualifications in lower back pain.
If anything crops up that needs medical input, I’ll always point you in the right direction 👍

If your back has been holding you back — this is where we start.
Drop me a message if you want more details.

This now does three things really well:

🧠💪 MOVE LIKE A HUMAN — BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE

You weren’t built to sit. You were built to crawl, walk, squat, lift, rotate, hang, run. Movement isn’t just exercise — it’s a biological requirement for health.

🔍 A landmark 2018 study in The Lancet (Ekelund et al.) showed that 60–75 minutes of moderate movement per day can eliminate the increased risk of death from prolonged sitting. Yes — movement literally offsets mortality risk.

Here’s what regular, functional movement does for you:
🧠 Improves brain health + mood
❤️ Lowers blood pressure + stabilizes heart rhythm
💪 Builds resilience, mobility, strength
🔥 Boosts insulin sensitivity + reduces inflammation
🧬 Extends healthspan, not just lifespan

Want to feel better, live longer, and move pain-free into old age? Stop “working out” — and start moving like a human again.

Most people over 50 have been given the wrong advice.

“Take it easy.”
“Slow down.”
“Be careful.”

Sounds sensible… but it’s exactly why so many people lose strength, confidence, and independence.

Here’s the truth:

You don’t need to stop training.
You need to train properly.

I work with adults 50+ — including those with heart conditions, diabetes, and joint issues — helping them:

✔️ Build real strength
✔️ Improve health safely
✔️ Feel confident in their body again

No extremes. No guesswork. No fear.

Just smart, structured training that works with your body — not against it.

If you’re ready to feel strong again, message me

🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️ JUST OVER TWO WEEKS TO GO — AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

On 14 September, Dave and I set off to cycle the Western Front Way, from Nieuwpoort in Belgium through the battlefields of the Western Front to Péronne in the Somme.
And now it's getting VERY real!

Our fundraising target for Combat Stress is £2,000.
RAISED: £1,201 ❤️ TO GO: £799 🎯

So we're asking for one final push before we get on those bikes.

If you've been thinking, “I'll sponsor them nearer the time”...
This is nearer the time! 😂

Even £5 makes a difference. In fact, if around 160 people gave a fiver, we'd virtually be there.

And if you can't donate, please SHARE THIS POST. That costs absolutely nothing and could put our fundraiser in front of somebody who can help.

Combat Stress supports veterans struggling with their mental health, which makes this journey through the battlefields of the Western Front mean far more to us than simply completing a bike ride.

14 SEPTEMBER. TWO BIKES. ONE WESTERN FRONT. £799 TO GO.

We'll do the pedalling. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️ Can you help us get the fundraising over the line?

Please donate. Please share. And thank you to everybody who's already behind us.

Stop Telling Me You Don’t Need a Personal Trainer…

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make isn’t choosing the wrong exercise.
It’s believing they don’t need coaching because they “already know what to do.”
Most people don’t ring me up and say…
“Ian, I’d like to improve my hip stability.”
Or…
“Can you increase my thoracic mobility?”
Nobody has ever walked into Mercian Fitness and asked me to improve their ankle dorsiflexion.
What they actually say is…
“I can’t get up off the floor anymore.”
“My knees hurt every time I use the stairs.”
“I’m worried about falling.”
“I get out of breath playing with the grandchildren.”
“I used to enjoy walking, but now my back aches.”
“I just don’t feel as capable as I used to.”
That’s the real conversation.
Here’s the thing…
I don’t actually sell exercise.
Exercise is the tool.
What I really help people get back is their life.
I help people climb stairs without hanging onto the handrail.
I help people carry shopping without worrying about their back.
I help people get on the floor with the grandchildren knowing they can get back up again.
I help people walk further on holiday.
I help people feel confident enough to book that walking trip, play another round of golf, or simply get through the day without everything hurting.
Strength is the vehicle.
Mobility is the vehicle.
Fitness is the vehicle.
The destination is independence.
The destination is confidence.
The destination is living your life instead of watching it from the sidelines.
That’s why I sometimes smile when people tell me…
“I don’t need the gym.”
You’re absolutely right.
You don’t need a gym.
You don’t need kettlebells.
You don’t need rowing machines.
You don’t need mobility drills.
What you do need is a body that’s still capable of doing the things you love in five, ten and twenty years’ time.
Those exercises are simply the price of admission.
As I often tell my members…
Nobody dreams of doing press-ups.
They dream of being able to get themselves off the floor.
Nobody dreams of squats.
They dream of getting off the toilet without struggling.
Nobody dreams of rowing intervals.
They dream of walking around Rome, climbing Snowdon, dancing at a wedding or keeping up with the grandchildren.
That’s why we train.
Not to become gym champions.
To become better at life.
So next time you tell yourself you don’t need strength training, mobility work or cardiovascular exercise…
Ask yourself a different question.
What do you want your body to still be able to do in ten years’ time?
Because that’s what we’re really training for.

🔥 What is Upper Aerobic Training?

Upper aerobic training pushes you toward the top end of your aerobic zone—so your body learns to handle faster paces and heavier breathing without tipping fully into anaerobic, high-intensity territory.

Think of it as a bridge between steady base work and tough interval sessions.
How it should feel:

Breathing: Noticeably heavier than in base aerobic work, but still controlled—you’re not gasping.
Conversation test: You can speak a short sentence, but you’ll need to pause for breath more often.
Effort level (RPE): Around 7 out of 10—“comfortably hard” but still sustainable for 20–40 minutes.
Heart rate: Roughly 70–80% of your maximum. (Max HR estimate: 220 – your age, then × 0.7–0.8)

Benefits: ✅ Improves your ability to sustain faster paces ✅ Boosts lactate threshold (delays fatigue) ✅ Builds mental and physical toughness ✅ Perfect prep for events or performance training

Example upper aerobic workouts: 🚴 30–40 min bike ride at a strong, steady pace 🏃 Tempo run or brisk uphill hike 🏊 Continuous swimming with a slightly faster stroke rate 🏋️ Functional circuits with minimal rest and moderate resistance

💡 Tip: Upper aerobic work is best done after you’ve built a solid base in the 60–70% range—it’s the “next gear” in endurance training.

🌬️ Breathe Better, Feel Better 🧘‍♂️

Your breath is one of the most powerful tools you have—and most people don’t use it properly.

Whether you’re stressed, training hard, or just trying to unwind, the right breathing technique can calm your nervous system, sharpen your focus, and improve your performance.

Here are 3 simple breathing exercises to try today:

1️⃣ Box Breathing (great for calm and control) 👉 Inhale 4 secs → Hold 4 secs → Exhale 4 secs → Hold 4 secs Repeat for 2–5 minutes

2️⃣ 4-7-8 Breathing (ideal for winding down) 👉 Inhale for 4 secs → Hold for 7 secs → Exhale for 8 secs Do 3–4 rounds, especially before bed or after a tough session

3️⃣ Nasal Breathing Walks (boosts endurance & recovery) 👉 Go for a 10–20 min walk breathing only through your nose. It’s harder than it sounds—but fantastic for cardiovascular health and mental clarity.

These techniques are simple—but powerful.

🧠 Less stress 💪 Better oxygen delivery 🛌 Improved sleep and recovery
Breathwork is something I often include in my sessions to support recovery, resilience, and results.

Same Weight. Different Body.

One of the biggest myths in health and fitness is that the number on the scales tells you everything.
It doesn’t.
Two people can weigh exactly the same, yet have completely different bodies, different levels of strength, and very different futures when it comes to health and independence.
As we get older, we naturally lose muscle unless we give our bodies a reason to keep it. This process, known as sarcopenia, starts surprisingly early and accelerates with age if we don’t regularly challenge our muscles.
The good news? Strength training works.
Regular resistance exercise can: • Help maintain and build muscle mass. • Improve bone strength. • Reduce the risk of falls. • Make everyday tasks like climbing stairs, carrying shopping and getting out of a chair much easier. • Help you stay independent for longer. • Improve blood sugar control and metabolic health. • Improve quality of life far more than simply trying to lose weight.
At Mercian Fitness, we don’t chase skinny.
We chase strong.
Strong enough to play with grandchildren. Strong enough to travel. Strong enough to enjoy retirement. Strong enough to keep living life on your own terms.
Remember too, the scales can’t tell the difference between fat and muscle. That’s why focusing only on weight can be misleading. If you’re getting stronger, moving better and feeling healthier, you’re heading in the right direction—even if the scales barely move.
Train for the life you want to live, not just for the number you want to see.
Research supports this approach. Progressive resistance training is consistently recommended as one of the most effective ways to preserve muscle, maintain function, reduce falls risk and promote healthy ageing.
