Understand the difference between art and technical tattooing. I teach this ALL the time…

Art - where shadows go and why, contrast, tones, detail etc…

Technique - clean lines, smooth shading etc…

No technical control means you can’t apply your artistic skills. That’s a problem.

Typically I see self taught artists practicing the basics on full tattooing designs. We can’t pull clean lines and do smooth shaded if we don’t understand the things that contribute to doing that.

A I teach this matter to my apprentices and students so that we can breakdown these contributing factors and learn what it takes to tattoo with professional technique.

These types of things are overlooked by beginners and even many artists who are already working in studios.

It’s easy to overlook key details that contribute to clean tattooing. Although some of these exercises don’t produce the most exciting tattoos, this is where the real homework and practice is.

This was the start of a 4-day 1-1 seminar with my student, Rachel.

Rachel is tattooing but needs structure and professional quality learning.
