If I started a tattoo again in 2026, these are the things I would do.
I wouldn’t waste time self teaching like I did. Finding a mentor will help you avoid making bad habits, bad mistakes and wasting unnecessary time.
Beginners typically do too much too soon. We know there’s a lot to learn and a lot to prove so we want to take big steps to get there as quick as possible.
It’s a common and simple mistake. Counterintuitively, we need to actually take small steps often and repeat the steps as we go so we really digest them and understand them.
The reason progress can be so hard is because we never build a solid foundation of skills in previous exercises to help us progress in the next.
I’ve mentored tattoo artists with almost 10 years experience, tattoo apprentices from day one and even Tattoos students in my online tattoo course.
The process of learning, practising and receiving feedback is needed at all levels, especially at the beginning when we have no experience to guide us.

My 5 variables is something every professional uses whether they realise or not. They are the parts of the tattoo process that vary, change and must be controlled for us to tattoo with quality and confidence.

Swipe to see… it can be hard to find a good source of information and guidance.
I was expected to teach myself in my apprenticeship, like many are.
Imagine if someone went through years of experince and put together a course in a laid out structure of learning…
That’s what CrooksTattooAcademy.com is.
Inside, is my online tattoo course. Carefully structured to help you build a foundation of skills and techniques while getting feedback from me.
Some exercises included will contribute towards your portfolio which will help when finding opportunities in tattooing, something I also mentor students with.
My first student, Chris, spent 8 months self teaching. He joined my course and began to learn with a structure that made the process understandable.
Just a few months with Chris’ hard work and new portfolio he got himself a tattoo apprenticeship where he continues to learn today in a professional tattoo studio

The structure I was teaching to my student here is all in my online tattoo course.
It’s a structure of exercises that is made to build a foundation of skills in tattooing, all while building portfolio pieces and having feedback from me.
