The summer solstice is almost here, bringing us the longest day of the year. It’s the perfect time to head outdoors and explore how people told the time long before clocks were invented.

Using a stick, some pebbles and a sunny spot in the garden, children can create their own sundial and watch the shadow move throughout the day.
