Loved watching reading her new book, Gruffalo Granny today, an event organised by the British Library. She dressed in a brown coat which was her fur and huge mouse ears. Really enjoyed listening to her reading the story and then the children asking questions to both Julia and Axel Scheffler after. Axel showed us how he draws and how he makes his characters come to life. Fantastic event!

Continuing with Poisonous Poetry, I used Seven Devils by +machine for this unseen poetry lesson. It uses many poetic techniques, including religious imagery, symbolism, repetition, metaphor, and sound patterns.

I chose this to continue poisonous poetry because its lyrics create a dark, threatening atmosphere and explore ideas that could be seen as psychologically or morally “toxic.”

1. Religious imagery:
The title itself refers to “seven devils,” which evokes ideas of evil, possession, sin and damnation. Florence uses religious language throughout the song to make the speaker seem surrounded by something sinister.
2. Poison as a metaphor:
The song repeatedly presents something harmful as if it is inside or consuming the speaker.
3. Violence and threat:
There is a sense of danger and revenge in the lyrics. The speaker doesn't simply describe sadness - they create an atmosphere where someone or something is threatening and powerful.
4. Repetition:
The repeated phrases make the song feel almost like an incantation or curse. This is particularly effective because it makes the darkness feel unavoidable, as though the speaker is trapped inside these thoughts.

FB won’t let me attach the song but you can hear it on my Instagram & Tiktok pages.

This is a snippet from my first GCSE Masterclass for 26/27 - today was all about poetry, both Power and Conflict and unseen.

Next masterclass is 9/10 and will be about English Language P1.

Y8 Poisonous Poetry!

Poisonous poetry is poetry that is harmful, toxic, or emotionally destructive in its themes or language. It can also be used metaphorically- poetry that is beautiful or seductive on the surface but contains a damaging message underneath.

I haven been working on modal verbs with my Y5 & Y6 students.

Modal verbs are important because they help us express different meanings and attitudes in a sentence.
Without them it would be harder to show whether something is possible, necessary, allowed, likely, or advisable.

In short: modal verbs make our communication more clear, precise, and expressive.
