In our brand new blog, John Claughton, Co-founder of WoLLoW, explores why the traditional approach to primary languages often leaves EAL pupils behind—and how a radical rethink can turn into a powerful asset.

John discusses how despite our country being as multilingual as ever, there lies a severe lack of interest in our pupils multilingualism.

“This is is most evident, and perhaps most damaging, in primary schools where French and Spanish are the Big Beasts of primary languages.”

💡 ☺️ However, there is hope. It is possible to construct a primary languages curriculum which teaches not a language but about languages, how they work, why they are similar to and different from each, how they are written down, how they relate to all other subjects, why they matter in the history of migration and empire, in culture and identity – even what fun it can be to break the codes and see the patterns.

✅ Thats what WoLLoW does.

Instead of teaching one language, WoLLoW champions teaching about languages. From Greek to Braille, sign language to scripts, WoLLoW offers over 100 free lessons that make language learning inclusive, exciting, and deeply connected to the world.

In this Heddle blog, John breaks down:
✔ The current state of language education in England
✔ How schools can make the shift towards WoLLoW
✔ Why teachers might hesitate—and how to overcome it
✔ Practical starting points for everyone

⭐ Read the full blog in the Heddle community now, and visit the WoLLoW website for further information and resources to support you in starting WoLLoW in your classroom.
