🗣️ Nearly 2 million children in England speak another language at home. Yet there’s little guidance for teachers and few sources of support.
Enter EAL: a social venture which connects teachers with the resources and training they need to confidently teach multilingual students. Their innovative assessment tools mean that teachers can plan lessons based on detailed insight into what pupils know, and school leaders can see exactly what support is making a difference.
Founded by Dr Robert Sharples in the School of Education, Heddle has grown from a Bristol-based initiative into a global network, with members from more than 35 countries around the world.

We're proud to share that Power Education, based at the University of Bristol Barton Hill Micro-campus, recently celebrated a huge milestone! 🎉
Secondary school students from East Bristol, who regularly attend Power Education's weekend tutoring sessions, undertook a work experience visit to the Temple Enterprise Quarter Campus (TQEC) in April. Hosted by Sir Robert McAlpine, the students gained an insight into its construction and the different routes into the industry.
Since Power Education began operation at the Barton Hill Micro-campus in September 2023, both academics and students at the School of Education have voluntarily taught tutoring sessions to help students in marginalised communities reach their educational potential. We couldn't be prouder to continue our support for such an empowering initiative 👏
