On this day in 1998, Page & Plant arrived in Vancouver to begin the ‘Walking Into Everywhere’ Tour in September to present a set that incorporated four numbers from the ‘Walking into Clarksdale’ album: ‘Walking into Clarksdale’, ‘When The World Was Young’, ‘Heart in Your Hand’ and ‘Most High’.

This was the first of three days we were to perform at the GM Place, now known as the Rogers Arena!

I was given my The Gretsch Company White Falcon in the late Eighties or early Nineties. The overdubs on the song ‘Walking into Clarksdale’ were all done on the White Falcon.

Ironically, given Robert’s desire to avoid overdubs, the song with the most guitars on it became the title track of the album.

On this day in 2014, I saw Kate Bush at the Hammersmith Odeon.

Kate Bush is an artist and writer of some of the most extraordinary material I have had the pleasure to experience. From hearing “Man With A Child In His Eyes” written in her teens and on her debut album I knew this was a unique talent with a depth of profound understanding to all things musical. She continued to grow artistically and released a catalogue of fascinating lyrical music over the years.

In 1979 Kate Bush played her last concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. From then on she became quite a successful recluse. When it was announced in 2014 that she was to perform a run of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon the tickets evaporated. However I was lucky to be given two tickets and went with poet Scarlett Sabet to experience the communion.

Kate generated an unparalleled commitment from the audience who attended her shows. It was that they were requested not to record the show that evening and they kept to that. I think there may have been a public lynching awaiting anyone who may disobey.

The feeling for love and respect for Kate was tangible. Her show displayed the measure of her genius and vision both past, present and future. Each and every one of us was truly moved by her concert both visually and musically.

On this day in 1974, I played the Austin Encore Festival with Bad Company

Bad Company were a newly-signed band on the Swan Song label. Peter Grant and I went to see them at the Austin Pop Festival and I duly got up and had a play. I became quite pally with the members of Bad Company and, in fact, teamed up with the legendary Paul Rodgers to make some music in the 80s.

On this day in 1969, Led Zeppelin played the Texas International Pop Festival.

Festivals were starting to become well established in the US and the Texas Pop Festival offered a substantial bill of performing artists. Led Zeppelin played a good set on this day.

I watched Sam & Dave perform and hung out with Janis Joplin, whom I had hung out with at Steve Paul’s Scene Club in New York in the Yardbirds days. Around this time, I also bumped into Nico at the same club, when she was with the Velvet Underground, and it was interesting to see her within that context because it suited her much better.

The Velvet Underground had a profound effect on me.

On this day, I played in Flushing Meadows, New York with Led Zeppelin and we were on the bill with Buddy Guy and Larry Coryell. The legendary Bernard Purdie was playing drums in the house band that night.

I made a point of going to hear Buddy Guy as this would be my first time hearing him play live. I’d admired and had been moved by his playing, one of my earliest access points being his dynamic guitar playing and vocals on the ‘Folk Festival of the Blues’ album on Chess Records.

I had heard legendary stories of him when he had made a fleeting visit to England in 1965. Even to this day, Buddy Guy’s guitar playing and vocals are something of a primaeval force.

On this day in 1971, Led Zeppelin played the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans.

Finally, I get to play the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans, a musical destination that I had craved for many a year.

With homegrown talent and the likes of Clarence Frogman Henry, Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino, Frankie Ford, Dr John, Professor Longhair, The Mardis Gras Indians, The Metres, The Neville Brothers, Hughey ‘Piano’ Smith and the mighty blind blues minstrel Snooks Eaglin – the list is endless of the talent that was born and raised in this magickal area. Frankie Ford was still appearing at his bar in Bourbon Street at the time that we played there.

Bourbon Street pulsated with energy and indigenous music. I had the appetite for all of it!

Last Tuesday, I went to the near Nettlebed. My daughter had alerted me to the fact that was commencing a 30-date tour, the first date being at the Crooked Billet.

Fortunately we had some time to catch up before the show.

Albert was always an unusually gifted guitarist. We may have been in our teens when we met at the legendary Gioconda Cafe, a musicians’ hangout in Soho.

He had toured with Chris Farlowe and recorded his guitar on Stormy Monday Blues with Chris singing under the pseudonym Little Joe Cook. Albert’s beautiful fluid playing was sheer class. When I decided to bail out from the touring band Neil Christian & the Crusaders to go to art college, it was Albert who was recruited to take my place.

Bringing things up to date, Albert and his band kicked off their set and I was transfixed with the repertoire and the choice of material. It truly was a masterclass. Albert was playing his guitar and also singing across an eclectic set. When he played his iconic composition Country Boy, the exquisite, inventive playing was riveting. The audience rose to give a well-deserved standing ovation. He then carried on, now playing piano accompanying his voice, then switched back to the guitar as he sang the Johnny Burnette Rock and Roll Trio’s Tear It Up.

Albert Lee: good luck with the rest of your tour and many more well-deserved ovations.

On this day in 2010, I saw Bad Company at Wembley and I went with original drummer Simon Kirk and guitarist Mick Ralphs. It was really good to hear those guys going through their paces and Paul Rodgers Official performance was high class. He hasn't lost his magic.
